Default What's wrong with using a hose to wash your car?

I ran across this thread for a forum member selling his car. In the ad, he wrote "Never washed with a garden hose.". I don't want to clutter up his ad with unrelated stuff, but it got me thinking: How do you wash a car without a garden hose? And what is wrong with a garden hose anyway? Even if you use a "waterless" wash (which is really a low volume wash with water) you have to put water in it, likely from the tap. Unless you are super **** retentive and use only filtered distilled water, which I simply cannot imagine.

I suppose he could just use a quick detailer whenever the car gets dusty or dirty, but that's likely to do more damage to the paint than using tap water to wash it.

And no, I'm not going to buy his car, I've already got a car. I was just bored.

People do and say stupid things.
Who knows what that comment meant…. Did he use RO water? Did he only use drive through car washes? Did he just never wash the car? Did he use quick detailer? Did he use a foam cannon?

Who know, who cares. I wouldn’t buy the car just because the owner sounds stupid from the ad.

PS: my car only gets washed with imported water that was collected from freshly melted snow from the Swiss Alps.

I can see the sellers point not using a garden hose. The rubber and metal tip will scratch the paint. I don’t use a garden hose either but I do use the water that comes out of it with a microfiber sponge.

I use a garden hose to get water from the house to a pressure washer..... Should I put my head through a window for my stupidity?

@yeller z06, I saw the same ad and thought the same thing.

I use a garden hose. Always have. I did however ask my water softener installer to add a spigot in the garage for washing my cars.

Mine doesn't get dirty often and a quick wipe with the spray detailer.

When I have washed it, I take it to the car wash and spray it down with the soapy water and then use my hand (no towel or sponge).

I know some people use a 2-bucket method.

If it's a light coat of dust no problem. I've been using Griot's Speed Shine for about the past 20 years on my factory lacquer...no damage.
I don't get the garden hose issue. I've used mine plenty of times over the last 48 years.....I'm the only one who's ever washed it....

my garage has a soft water spigot as well. Definitely better than hard water.

Why would anyone ever let any part of the hose, including the nozzle, come in contact with the car? It’s like car washing 101.

Owning a black car, the water spots are by far the biggest problem, 1000% more than actual dirt.

I've even added a leaf blower to the ritual and still the water spots are impossible to control.

I feel your pain! I do sections at a time, wash front clip then dry with an Absorber. Move to doors and roof then dry, and finally the tail end then dry. If I get a little soap on the panels I just dried, then I rinse it off with a very slow stream of water from my GARDEN HOSE.

It also helps if I keep it out of the sun. And sometimes I have to move it half way through because the shade from my neighbor's house doesn't move as fast as the sun.

What do you think of the Absorber?? Thought about buying one of those but thought of the old fashioned "chamois" which never seemed to work very well.

Ii would never use anything else. I've tried the leaf blower, takes about the same time as the absorber but I don't have to hold the Absorber above my head for 10 minutes. (Or maybe my leaf blower sucks)

I would say it works better than a chamois. But the chamois dries and turns into a brick. The Absorber you put back in the can wet. But for $15-20, I can't beat it.

I have hard well water at my home and the first time washing my car after bringing it home, the glass alone was so spotted it turned into another job just to remove the spots. I purchased Griot's water deionizer and no more water spots. Even if the sun dries the car before I get to hand dry it, there's no spots. Not cheap at $300 but the deionizer works great and is worth it if you have this problem.

Stop washing in the sun.

I have all black vehicles, I get it. You HAVE to wash the in the shade and when it's cooler out. I wash mine near dusk, and since I'm doing 2-3 SUVs at a time, I often have to finish in the dark. But if you don't, you'll get spots. I use my ego 765 CFM blower for drying now. I don't even touch the cars after they're rinsed, just force the water off. A ceramic coating or spray on helps a lot with this.

1st of all, opinions are like azzholes. Everyone has one.

Back in the day when I started driving, some 62 years ago, cars rusted out from the inside too in our climate. This was from water in the door panels etc. Were they Corvettes? I don't know. Couldn't afford one back then.

My Bride of 54 years and I take our daily ride along beautiful Lake Erie or go to a local car show. When we get home the car isn't very dirty. I just use my air compressor to blow it off and use a California Duster. During the off

season, I clay bar, polish and wax . I was just trying to say that there is no rust in the door frame etc.

Am I going to call you stupid or crude? No. Let the other members figure that out.
