In the process of restoration on my 1986, I had to remove the rusted sending unit and pump, pump out the old crap fuel and clean the inside of the tank by hand with my arm past the elbow through the opening of the sending unit. While I was cleaning the inside there was some sharp sections in the opening that were cutting my arm so I hammered the sharp sections so it wouldn't continue to cut me.
Now I am rebuilding all the small touches and after install of the rubber overflow and rain water pan at the fuel fill neck, noticed that the tank has somehow rolled backwards at the top and the rubber.
I have tried to loosen the strap nuts but they are quite tight and I don't want to risk breaking the straps and having to remove the rear bumper.
Has anyone come across this before?
Anyone have a suggestion on how I can get the tank back into place properly?
I will upload a photo when I can as I seem to be having issues with file type even though it says its one file type on my computer but the site says it's something else.
I Don't know if this number has a meaning other than for Corvette depot but the sending unit I got was model #1029576 (they said it was for my year). I have checked from top of sending unit mounting edge to neck start of the filler head and they are the same. I will check later for any possible angle difference but right now the pan is about 1/2" low.
I still can do the picture at this time some might have to redownload image.
The black tray surrounding the gas cap, I don't know to call it a pan watertray, overspill boot, drip tray.
I still have the original sending unit and will try and confirm measurements before I have to remove the new sending unit again to verify everything again.
I never hit my strap nuts with a torque wrench. Just a little over-snug.
I should look in the FSM and see what the torque is supposed to be and check it. I can't imagine that those things would have to be really tight.
I never touched the straps holding the tank down, just swapped out the sending unit. While I thought after I knew something was wrong I did try to loosen the straps but they didn't loosen and I was worried about forcing it and breaking the strap so I stopped. The tank is sitting on the supports underneath though.

Yeah, ChumpVette's thought on the straps previously in the thread just reminded me that I never torqued em is all.
The other thing, the tank has flat spots where it rests in the back bumper support. I’d be curious seeing the filler neck compared to the old. I almost want to say the assembly has been installed oriented incorrectly.
This is what the spout looks like on my 84 so something is up for sure, but you're right it appears the tank has shifted/rotated towards the rear of the car by a few degrees. I know this doesn't help much but will validate your sanity.
