Doing preliminary planning for 7-10 day trip to Van Island in July with my wife and 15yo son. Flying to Victoria, renting a car and finding a Hotel and drink beer for a day or two to relax, then what?
Aquarium?
Museums?
touristy stuff.
Where to go, what to see? This is NOT my idea of a vacation, but here I am none-the-less.
How much driving do you want to do? You can easily spend a few days just wandering around Victoria, then a short drive to Sidney or to Sooke.
Victoria to Port Hardy is about 7 hours if you want to travel from one end to the other, however the drive from Campbell River to Port Hardy is a whole lot of nothing with not much at the end.
Tofino and Ucluelet (about 5 hours) on the west coast are cool, but accomodations will be extremely pricey and probably already booked up.
Qualicum Beach (about 3 hours) and Comox Valley (another hour) would make a night or two overnight trip.
Definitely go on a whale watching tour, from either Victoria or Cowichan Bay, a fishing trip also a good option but may be cold and foggy on the west coast early am.
