Strap style filter wrench and keep working at it.
Nuclear option is a hammer and chisel around the filter flange, hard to do in such a confined space though.

the gearwrench strap tool is what dented the oil filter but maybe I did it wrong
I’m confused how to orient the strap on the strap ones
I gunna try holding ice against the filter to cool it hoping it will shrink a hair
Omg I tried the gearwrench strap again and got it to work. Maybe I’m stupid but it was confusing what orientation to put the strap and it dented the filter my first try
Did you lube the gasket?
3/4 turn past gasket contact is the most you need, I always do mine hand tight, never use a wrench for install.
yeah I usually lube the gasket and prefill the filter
I noticed this slight line in the oil filter mating surface. Seems right where oring would touch
It barely catches my fingernail
Is this problematic? I don’t remember seeing this in past years. I wonder if there was small thing of debris on the gasket last year and it gouged this slightly?
I think it will be ok but curious of your opinions
I made a living removing filters like this years ago. It was just put on too tight nothing else. People have a bad habit of doing this and at times they get stuck.
At worse case we used Channel locks if there was room or just punctured it with a large screw driver and twist it off.
I have gone as far as removing the end and then using a punch to unthread it off the mating place.
No need to tow it you just have to get in the break the grip with bigger tools. They all come off.
I usually lube the o-ring and then put it as snug as I can by hand, and then go ~1/4 rotation further w/ ratchet.
Never had an issue on my ls1 camaro nor this c5z until today.
Last year I must have gone past that
That's too tight. Just 3/4 turn or so after the gasket touches the base.
And if/when you have to use tools like the strap wrench or pliers to remove the filter, attach it as close to the base of the filter as you can, where it is much stronger.
adjustable filter wrench from Amazon and it has worked well in the short time I've had it. It's well designed and made and is surprisingly heavy. I've only changed 2 filters with it, but it worked well both times. You can "toggle" it to loosen or tighten filters. I haven't used it on the C5 yet, but WIX lists their 51042XP filter at 74mm, so this tool will fit it.
Actually Channel Lock makes oil filter pliers that are sweet, I have all the sizes and wish I had had them years ago. They work like a large channel lock but the jaws are made for filters. Good leverage grip and fit to get in tight spots.
I follow the directions on the filter. My Wix says 3/4 turn after gasket contact. I mark the filter and tighten it as spec'd. Never any issues with removal.....
