Nope, no diesel oil in my gasoline burning car. Valvoline VR1 conventional racing oil designed for flat tappet and classic car engines. 10W30 or 20W50 depending on your climate.

Chevron Delo 400 in my old cars. It was recommended to me by a Chevron tribologist who, not coincidentally, used it in his road race car. That was good enough for me.
Several years ago I owned a VW diesel car. Because of some legal reasons regarding emissions, Volkswagen offered a by back on any of their diesel powered cars and I took the offer. Part of the deal included a $500 gift certificate which was good only at the VW dealership. Not owning a diesel powered car anymore, I bought $500 worth of 15W40 diesel engine oil. I run this oil in our '62 which has a GM crate engine RamJet 350 and all my diesel powered equipment (tractors, Caterpillar track loader, lawn mowers, ATV, generator).
Agree with Leif that the Valvoline VR1 sounds like a good choice for these early cars. For those that like synthetic for these old cars (I do NOT) Mobil 1 now has a similar type oil called Mobil 1 CLASSIC
However, for 28 years I ran Pennzoil 15W-40 Diesel Oil in my 1967 car with the original 327/350 HP engine. No problems or issues during this time. The oil was rated for both diesel and spark engines. This oil is no longer produced. Shell purchased Pennzoil (and Quaker State) and the Rotella and the Pennzoil for diesel oil were merged into a single product.
One consideration on the new diesel oils, there are very high in detergents (calcium). This counter acts the benefits of the ZDDP needed for the flat tappet cams. No saying they won't work (I personally will not run them) but reducing the effectiveness of the ZDDP is typically not a direction I'd want to go in. Several non diesel oils made today have 1200 PPM or more of ZDDP. On my engines I stick to these.
I still have it in a car or too but I am trying to change over to VR1. I still think Rotella T4 is good stuff and I liked the 15W-40 weight but I’ve succumbed to popular opinion. I wish VR1 came in a comparable weight as the engines I have it in have sky high pressure reading on cold starts.

I just bought a case of Mobil 1 10W30 old car oil, evidently the only weight they make, used it in my 300 F 413 and the other half will go in the 65 396 when I get to it. I've been using Brad Penn 10W40, my preferred weight. My 396 runs very high oil pressure as does the 440 in my Plymouth Savoy, these engine builders are married to high volume pumps...
Boy - hate getting sucked into these "oil threads" but throwing a couple of other options in there for thoughts and opinions (everyone has one right?)
For ref: Have a couple of diesel tractors, numerous older vehicles and small 4-stroke engines.
I can't keep up unless I keep a journal and standardize, also looking at cost-effectiveness, but that is last on the scale, given everything.
I use Mobile 1 high mileage 5W&10W-30 (approx. 1100) in both old school engines & those flappets new enough for converters (cold climate here in winter). Compared their full spec sheets across weights a few years ago and actually think it was posted on here.
Over on the tractor forums it gets beaten to death as well, but nobody mentioned Rotella T6 synth. in the 5W-40 weight (approx 1200), it comes in other weights, including the std 15W-40
Valvoline VR-! 10w30 here in a 327/300 1966 and also a 72 LS-5. Walmart has started to carry in my area, $26.97 for a 5 quart container, but the store closest to me is always out so I have to go to the one across town. They also carry 20w50.
