Default Please post DAYTIME HUD pics if you have 70% front windshield tinting

Dealer says the front windshield 70% clear tint is affecting HUD brightness..
I had 2 other C8's with the same 70% front tint with 0 effect.
I think the HUD projector unit and/or wiring harness is faulty..
This is me during the day.. Nothing there..
I would like to show him this thread to prove to them its NOT the tint.
Please post your HUD display during the day if you have your windshield tinted.
Thanks!
Ellis

I don't have a photo, but I can tell you, the HUD works just fine, no degradation issues with my Llumar 80% windshield tint.

I don’t think posts in a forum will sway the service department at your dealer.

We'll see about that...They didn't say they weren't going any further, as I have yet to speak to the service manager, but I want fuel (proof), when I ask for a new HUD unit & harness to be ordered, and tell them emphatically its NOT the tint..
Which I know for a fact it isn't!

Dealers will do everything in their power to wriggle out of any warranty repairs because the per hour payback from Chevrolet corporate for warranty repairs is typically less than their normal labor rate. As long as they have work that can be scheduled for regular service, they'll be losing money servicing your car at the reduced warranty repair labor rate and will prioritize work charged at the regular labor rate. At least that's my latest understanding.

I would bring a mirror and a piece of glass with a plain white sheet (and maybe a black sheet or cloth) and ask them to turn on one of their in-stock C8s with HUD. Put the mirror in the field of view then the glass with the black or white sheet backing. Then do the same on your car to compare. This eliminates the tinted or non-tinted factory windshield from the equation and proves a faulty HUD has nothing to do with windshield tint.

Default The light sensor in in the HUD unit!

The light sensor is in the projector. See photo. I verified that it brightens up when a light is shown on it, at the proper angle. I tried to illuminate it from inside of the car with a light shining down, and it did not respond. So, I got out of the car and shined it on the sensor at a very low angle, like when sun is in yo face. Then it brightened up. Because I was outside of the car I could not see the image on the windshield. But I was able to look down inside of the projector from that angle (takes a little experimentation) and I could see the image down inside of the unit. And when the light shines on it, it gets pretty bright! And I also verified that it does NOT respond to the ambient light/sunload sensor on the dash, but the headlight and DRLS do!

Why not just take a mirror and see if the HUD projector is even on?

@YO-EL I have Xpel XR Plus 70% ceramic tint on the windshield. Never had any issues with it. You asked for a photo. Here is a pic from today, a bright and sunny day. No issues at all.

Yep thats what I have, and thats exactly how the HUD appeared on my other 2 C8's.
Spoke to service manager, they are ordering another HUD projector unit, but not the harness....

What's the average price did you guys pay to have your front windshield tinted? I'm seriously contemplating this because the sun here in South Florida is plain brutal during the summer months.

I notice one thing about the posts showing the HUD image on the windshield with tint. The entire outline of the HUD unit is reflecting back, not just the image. I'll have to check mine, without tint, but I have never noticed that the HUD unit it self was reflected in the windshield. Maybe they are all like that.

I think mine was $250 or $300 for the XPel XR+ which is probably one of the most expensive tints on the market.

For Xpel Prime XR Plus 70% front windshield alone I shopped around and was quoted $200 from a shop in Dearborn, MI before my car was shipped from there but I ended up going local and found a shop in San Diego, CA that quoted the same despite being different markets with different costs of living. Just need to shop around.

I did check mine with no added tint and in bight outside light the outline of the entire HUD projector is visible as in the above images posted by others for the tint case.
