Default How do I program a new C7 Key FOB

JESUS - NOTHING works. Heres the story. I had two fobs when i bought my 2017 C7. One I lost. I still have one that works. I bought a new OEM key fob for $100 on EBay. Why is it so impossible to just program my new fob? I do the whole 5 xs with the trunk and the dash says "REMOTE LEARN PENDING PLEASE WAIT" Than it goes dark. NOTHING NADA. I wait 10 mintues. NOTHING. Isn't it supposed to say press engine start at some point? I tried this with my old fob in it, my old fob nowhere near it, my old fob in the steerin wheel, the new one in it. etc etc etc. Ive tried every damn thing suggeted by 100 websites and all I get is REMOTE LEARN PENDING PLEASE WAIT than nothing. My manual says just wait 10 min - but 20 can go by and nothing ever comes up again. I have new batteries in both fobs. How can this be so danmn hard? Why cant i get past step number 1?

There are specific directions for programing a single new fob with a old recognized remote.. It is different than programing two new fobs. It took me a few times to get it correct. Turning the key 5 times in 10 seconds can be tricky.

It is possible that your car has a problem with the remote key access system. Using the long method you should get "REMOTE
LEARN PENDING PLEASE WAIT" after the 5 key turns and 10 minutes later "PRESS ENGINE START BUTTON TO LEARN." Since you are not getting to the second message it is possibly a low voltage glitch.

Measure battery voltage with the engine off at the battery terminals or in the 12v receptacle inside the hatch on the right side wall. You should see around 12.7 volts. If possible put the battery on a maintainer. The long procedure is 30 minutes or so.

Verify fob batteries are good - close to 3.3 volts and installed correctly.

First of all - make sure your new fob is the correct part number. Certainly 2014-15 fobs are not recognized by 2016-19 and vice versa since they operate on different frequencies. I don't know if the correct model year range fob with the "wrong" number of buttons will work:

Second - adding a fob is a safe procedure. Unpairing all fobs and then adding new can become a real problem.

To be safe - try the Programming with Recognized Transmitters procedure in your manual first. This will verify the key switch (which seems to work for you) as well as the steering column slot. If this works, you will add fob #3. If the procedure doesn't work you probably need a dealer, locksmith, or appropriate programming tool.

If you really want fob #1 and #2 then try the Programming without Two Recognized Transmitters which will unpair all fobs previously paired to the car and then pair the fobs you have to the car as #1, #2, #3 etc. in the order that you put each one in the steering column slot and press the lock or unlock button.

I have added fob #3 on a 2006 C6, 2014 and 2019 C7 with no problems (once I realized that the 2014 fob was incompatible with the 2019 and got the correct fob).

Lots of good info here. I would 2nd making sure the FOB you bought is good. I did this once and bought a new OEM FOB of the correct part number listed above. I was successful with the short program but it ended up as FOB #3 so memory functions didn't work with it. I didn't want to risk bricking the car with the long program. It was just a backup/spare key so no biggie (nobody else drives it). With 2017 and newer you can't do a short program with only one working FOB. You'll have to do the long program. But again, if the FOB is old it may not work as mentioned. They made it more restrictive as the model years came out for good reason. Go through that thread posted above. It has all the info you need. In addition to having to follow the steps precisely, GM made this interface very buggy. Many people have used a timer app to get through it. They ignore the blank screens and just follow the steps after the 10 minutes lapses.
