The other day I had the Corvette out and I decided to see if the wiper door and wipers worked properly. I have not driven the car in the rain since I bought the car a year and a half ago. So I turned the wipers on,and the door operated properly, but the wipers did not work on either speed. I reached under the door and just touched the wiper arm with my finger tip and they came on and worked fine in both speeds. I shut the wipers off and tried them again, the door lifted properly, but the wipers didn't come on again, but once I just touched the wiper arm with my finger tip they started working fine. I tried this ten more times, and the same thing happened! I am at a loss? Any ideas why this is happening?
One possibility might be the limit switch that is mounted on the firewall. Its purpose is to keep the wipers from turning on before the cover is completely open. There is an adjustment on this. It might be that you are right on the edge of it working and a slight adjustment might fix it. The whole wiper system makes the line from the hood to the windshield look very good, but it is much too complicated. There is also a vacuum switch that ensures that the wipers have parked before the cover can close. and it is a trouble waiting to happen. If it does the cover stays open all of the time.
If it is the wiper motor itself, that is another can of worms. The motor has 12 volts to it all the time and the function is controlled by switching ground on the input wires from the wiper switch on the dash. It is possible that the motor is not going completely into the park position when it turns off. Moving the arms might finish the sequence.
When the wiper door opens, the angle bracket plunger pushes in an electric switch which "tells" the wiper motor it's good to turn on. As a test, after the door is open, push the angle bracket straight in toward the firewall. If the wipers operate then the plunger needs adjusting inward toward the switch.
As Robertea said, it's a complicated system, but kinda beautiful in all its workings and fail safes.
