Did K&N ship with foam around their filters, or a previous ding-a-ling that owned this car install it?
MAF occasionally threw a code, I noticed it was a K&N filter and wondered if something was contaminating the sensor.
If codes continue, I will pull the MAF and clean - but - was curious to know the origin of the foam tape. Could it be factory?
Edit - car is a '96 base.
Pic was taken on top of my wet-vac, so no need to guess what part the vacuum hose belongs to in the car . Degraded foam around edge of K&N filter.
Short answer Yes. The K&N didn't fit the stock air cleaner housing very well which is amazing considering how expensive they are, so they gave you some cheap foam to seal it up.
Although, what idiots - a square rubber gasket would have been enough to seal the deal, lol.

I agree - I don't see the point in K&N. Oiled cotton doesn't make much sense to me and I'm not racing the car so improved flow through the air filter is irrelevant to me.

I replace mine with the $20 Auto Zone points they give you after spending $100 so long as each purchase is over $20.
By the time I accumulate the points, it amounts to about one new filter a year. Think they're 19.99 so it works out great.
And Auto Zone is still good for cleaners and WD40 and stuff like that. So it adds up in short order.
The air filter never even really gets dirty anyway, as little as I drive it these days.
