Bout a year ago in my 86 I installed an aftermarket radio and divined out how to have it feed the factory amped speakers
and only had to replace two of the speakers and it actually sounds good-enough for me. Recently it's picked up some major
alternator whine, and I noticed today it has a different but also undesirable noise with the engine off key on. So I think the amps
are giving up and I don't believe I want to go through replacing the capacitors on them all (which is probably all they need if I had
to guess). Has anyone used the speaker adaptors that guy on ebay sells to fit 6.5's all around? Or can one cram an aftermarket
5.25 in the factory boxes and run new wire to them? I don't know that there is such a thing but to be frank I'm looking for minimal
effort and cost, I don't listen to music in the car a ton but the noise is a problem.
When I owned C4 I removed the Bose system when installed aftermarket radio, and installed new speakers and wires.
I also picked up a whine, and since I started chrome out the engine compartment I replaced alternator with chrome and whine never returned.
Kept that car 24 years and updated the radio once and never got the whine again.
If its not that important but you want some sound, just get a bluetooth speaker and connect your phone to it. Even really good ones are quite inexpensive these days.
Running new wire is easy in these cars. At least in my 92 with the kickpanel speakers. The early cars have the speaker in the doors? Still easy probably.
If you have an aftermarket radio you should be able use the amp built into the head unit, you will need to replace the Bose speakers with aftermarket speakers,
you can run new wires I believe other people have have used the factory Bose wire you just need to do your research. https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...formation.html
I modified my stock front boxes to accept 6.5's and it made a large difference over what Bubba had done before me. You can get a 6.5 to fit and seal onto the box, it just takes a little creativity and plastic work. I had considered using the adapters but after looking at the box it was apparent that modifying it was a better solution. Sealing the driver to the box will help with mid bass, something lacking once you remove the Bose factory stuff. I have pics and such should you want to try it.
