Default Instrument cluster

I'm trying to replace my tach cable.
Progress and problem so far:
I removed the drivers side AC vent and tried to get my hand up to the tach.
NO LUCK from under the das
I removed the 5 screws holding the cluster and replaced them with threaded bolts.
The problem is the cluster still won't come out. The collar around the steering column and the cluster
wont slide up the column. I cam pull the bottom of the cluster out a little but the top of the cluster won't budge.
I can't get my hand behind it to push it out from the back.
My only idea id to remove the center threaded rod and try to hook something behind the cluster to pull it out.
Any suggestions?
Bud

The column is holding it in place. Your either need to remove it or drop it. Also your need to remove the 2 screws in the fuse block to allow that to move out

In my experience you can't drop the column enough to get the instrument pod out, although you can definitely get more access room from behind it. But I have an Ididit tilt column. If yours is stock, you may be able to just drop your column, which is easier. Although it's fairly easy to remove the column.

What everyone else said is the best way, drop the column enough to slide it out, remove the tach cable from the distributor will help. Getting it back through the grommet will be your biggest challenge. I've been able to reach mine with a finger to spin it off and off after loosening it with some pliers like these.

Here's the problem...I dropped the column and it looks like the oil line to the gauge is hanging it up and I can't pull the cluster out. I can either unscrew the oil line at the gauge
or unscrew it on the engine side to give me some slack. I would prefer to unscrew it at the gauge but to get to it, it looks like I have to drop the emergency brake.
Suggestions??

I would go for the other end of the oil line because it is very easy to crossthread that connection at the gauge when you are going back. The other end is relatively easy if you pull the distributor. It varies from car to car but usually there is enough slack in the loops in the line to get just enough room to work on the speedometer and tach cables with the line still connected.
