Default Need help with placement of lower windshield trim clips (‘64 convertible)

I’m at the point in my build that I’m installing the glass. I knew I didn’t have the trim clips (on order) but what I didn’t realize was that there were no holes drilled in the cowl/windshield frame to mount them. The previous owner did the bodywork and for some reason “made them go away” not sure why or how. I painted the car and it never occurred to me that they had been filled in. I’m aware that the clip placement is critical to the trim fitting the glass and body properly. I’m getting the new aftermarket clips (I understand these tend to be problematic) this week. When I get them, will it be self explanatory as to where the holes need to be drilled or can I be a 1/16 off up or down and create a whole new set of problems? The spacing of the clips across the span of the windshield is a concern also but not as concerning as towards or away from the glass. Any advice or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jeff
No holes or witness marks telling me where the holes were.

I just pulled the windshield out of my ‘64 coupe. What’s left behind is a huge mess of sealant and God knows what else. I ordered some 3M adhesive remover which should arrive tomorrow. I can give you the measurements from my car once I can actually see the clips. Yes it is that bad!

We used Kerosene to clean up excess or old sealant when I did this for a living in the 70's....

Thanks Mark. Any pictures or measurements you can provide would be a great help. Good luck getting everything cleaned up. I’m not sure how to get the upper retaining screw and spacer in the upper corners either, but I’ll take a look at that when I get them in this week. I believe those are convertible specific. If they require holes, I don’t have those either.

Forum member and my friend "SJW" will be able to assist; He just installed a 64-67 lower moulding on his 63 convert.
He should be here shortly........
Aloha,
Rene'

Thanks for the responses. I’m quite familiar with Mid Year Mitch. His videos have been a blessing for me. I got all the clips in yesterday and did some basic mock up. It doesn’t seem as daunting as I first thought. I would just like to have some experienced guidance with the positioning of the clips before I start drilling into my freshly painted / 95% complete / very expensive toy.

I came to this thread just wanting to see final pictures of how your black paint turned out - it looks good from the slight pics shown, but how about a full body pic? I'm in admiration of your guts to go after first time painting an entire car, and a C2 in black nonetheless!

As Rene' posted, I dealt with this last year when converting my '63 convertible to be able to use the '64 - '67 lower molding. The '63 did not use screw-mounted retaining clips, and the retention flange on its molding differs from the later pieces. My original molding had been irretrievably damaged by a ham-fisted installer prior to my ownership.

I can't advise regarding exact lateral placement of the clips on a '64, and didn't worry about that. The one near each outer end will need to align with the clip that resides in the lower end of the side molding. The lateral placement of the others isn't critical.

Here are some photos that might prove helpful:

In a more recent post, Mike Coletta recommended tossing the little foam seals that are provided with the screws, and using sealant to seal the screw holes under the clips, and IIRC under the heads of the screws also. I wish I had heard this good advice from Mike prior to doing mine, but that post arrived some time later. He would be a great source for further guidance.

Good luck with it.

Live well,

SJW
