The major cause is AFM deactivating some of the cylinders. More prevalent on A8 transmissions, which is why people use the range device. Not impossible to have issues with M7, you actually have to select 4 cylinder mode. Overuse or abuse can be a cause of course.

The 2 rubber couplers on the torque tube are what wears out over time & mileage, this can happen with a manual or auto trans car

This is definitly one cause. Some have even had the tube fracture. But mine failed from the front shaft bearing. While it was out i had them put in an entire rebuild kit. All good now. Expensive repair.
