I’m trying to put a custom audio sound 630 in my 64 coupe. The problem is the stereo works fine when the engine is off when I. Start it up the stereo brakes up.what could be causing this
You need to define "brakes up". Does that mean it shuts off and back on or static or noise? Crackling noise or whine? AM? FM? Other? Did this car originally have a radio and did it work?

That probably means your charging system is very noisy (many voltage spikes and unstable voltage). It could mean that eventhough the average voltage is normal (~ 14 volts) that the instantaneous voltage is all over the place so that a voltmeter may not tell you all that much. Noisy output is common with the old vibrating points voltage regulator that was original to your car and to take some of that noise out, Chevy added capaicitors to the regulator. Check to see if that capacitor is still on the regulator. If you are very lucky, it could be something as simple as a loose fan belt or poor ground connections at the alternator, the battery, the regulator, and your audio unit. Unlike other cars with metal bodies, Corvettes are very sensitive to ground connections. You should also make sure the main output connection at the alternator is tight as well as other power connections. You might try adding a fairly large capacitor just before the unit's power connection.
