Default 327/365

I have a 1963 non matching numbers convertible. I have always wanted a 327/365, so I figured why not. I have a 2818 Holley, the 461 intake, and this part for the crank case breather. I removed the breather part shown in the image of the engine bay below. When I try to install, what I believe is the correct breather tube it hits the back of the Holley float bowl. Am I not doing something right. Also any comments constructive comments on the engine bay would be appreciated. I am not trying for NCRS quality just maybe a tribute. I also have parts on order for the water pump bypass (87 degree fitting) it looks like I may have to trim the water hose. Either the filler neck is wrong or the hose is wrong. Thanks again , in advance, for any help. Mitch

To start with it doesn't look like you're using the correct water outlet. The correct outlet for 63-65 340, 350, 365 & 375 horse engines is Chevrolet number 3827370 that points more toward the front of the engine. That housing looks like the 3877660 used on various Chevrolet engines from 66-73.

As far as the breather tube, are you sure it's the correct tube as there were four different tubes used between 63 and 65? That breather tube looks like it has too many bends in it. The 64-67 350/365 tube only has one bend in it I think. I'd have to be at work where I could pull the various tubes off the shelve to compare them, but it looks like a 64-65 250 and 300 horse tube to me, or maybe a 66-67 300? Also, what air cleaner are you trying to use with the tube? You're going to need either a 64 340 horse, a 65 350 & 365 horse, or the 66-67 14" open element air cleaner to use with the correct tube.

Finally, I don't think you have the right bypass hose either. The one you have looks like a 65-74 big block hose, not the 63-67 small block hose that's smaller with a much tighter bend in it than the one you have.

Attached is the thermostat housing you want for your "clone". Additionally, you want to move your vacuum hose for the brake booster above your accelerator linkage and route the return spring through the hole in the end of the accelerator rod not wrapped around the rod. Picture of my L79 for reference.

Leif I believe 63 used a stand from the intake bolt that held the hose away from the linkage

Keith,
I know that but with the OP using a Holley 2818 I don't think he's looking for originality. As you know, that bracket wasn't used after '63 and then the hose was routed as I stated and showed.

63 was a "one year only" pcv system, and air cleaner. It looks like you are trying to build a 64-65 type HP engine. What air cleaner do you have? I believe there was a question about the HP air cleaner to block vent tube about a month ago [?] and that was the same problem with the tube hitting the carb. The 250/300 horse power breather tube is different than the HP [high performance] 365 horse power engine. The correct tube was purchased from David Sokolowski, I believe....

Thanks everyone for the input. I bought a lot of wrong parts. On the vacuum fitting for the brake booster, where does the other line go?

You may have the wrong one, without AC or PG you only need one line to the booster.

On my car, the secondary line is for the factory A/C.

Yes, on a 65 327/365, which is what the OP is trying to duplicate, the hose from the fill tube goes to the fitting in the side of the carb and that fitting acts as a PCV of some sort, if I remember correctly.

I have the hose, and the fitting, with the small orifice, that goes into the side of the Holley.

The 64-65 365 did not use an open element air cleaner, it used the closed unit pictured below. The 14" open element air cleaner wasn't introduced for the small block until 66 and was not used on 64-65 365's, but should work if you get the right breather tube. Which air cleaner you use really depends on how much you want the engine to look like a real 327/365.

Default Hose routing

Does anyone have a picture of how this hose gets routed. It goes from the bottom of the exhaust manifold to the bottom of the air cleaner.

The following illustration is from the 1965 Assembly Manual. The pipe runs up behind the plug heat shields and exhaust manifold.
