Engine Blew Up Yesterday
Driving back from the grocery store yesterday, the c8 was at normal operating temperature (i.e. the tachometer showed normal full redline) and gave it a 2-3 gear WOT pull - then BOOM. Extremely loud explosion that sounded like a 12 ga. Instant smoke out the back and into the cabin, loud rotational clunking sounds, and then the engine cut. I rolled to the side of the road. Pictures immediately after:
Looking immediately behind the car, I saw an engine bearing on the ground:
Walked back the the area a few hundred yards back where the engine blew and found the following chunks of engine:
I had the car towed to my local dealership - which was a pain because the car will not go into neutral without a special tool. Left the car at the dealership via after hours procedures - which brings me to this morning’s post.
I will keep everyone updated on the process and how GM handles this issue. Nice to meet you all, but I wish it was under different circumstances.

I've been on this forum for several years, and first time I've seen a thread on a blown SR engine.
It will be interesting to see if it's related to the cylinder deactivation mechanism.

Luckily you have plenty of powertrain warranty remaining, so it should just be a matter of the inconvenience of being without the car during the repair.
And, afterward, you get to start the breakin process over with a brand new engine.

Could have been a lot of things, bad fuel causing detonation, stuck AFM lifter etc. Thankfully no fire, hopefully warranty takes care of you without a problem. Keep us updated, subbed to thread.
Yes, I purchased the car new.
Keep us posted...

So no GM has not figured out the issue but my guess is I will never know why the '26 ZR1 motor had a catastrophic engine failure!
