Default Warranty on C8 HTC repairs

A couple of weeks ago, I experienced the broken cable on my 2023 HTC with 18,000 miles on it. Luckily, I had the zip ties with me and got the top back up. The dealer ordered the new cable assembly and got the repair completed today.

The good news is that the Platinum extended warranty covered everything. Total bill was approx 450 dollars.

There has been a lot of discussion whether the warranty would cover HTC top repairs but in this case it did. I thought this might be good information for some of you with the same concerns.

This is a good data point. Some people have had the CPPP deny this coverage. The more people that get it covered the more leverage we have that it should be covered.

Greatly depends on who you buy it from and the terms (months/miles) as well as the age and miles on the car when you buy the warranty.

I bought the warranty from Todd Sutherland two years ago. It was for 96 months and 80,0000 miles. Total cost was 2,185 dollars. The service writer had no problems at all getting it approved.

Glad they took care of you.

I’ve seen mention of the zip ties a few times now. Curious how they come into use when this issue occurs?

Is this a common issue when the HTCs get older with the cable going bad?

Thanks for info. Can you show/explain the zip tie temp fix?

That’s great news! That’s one area I’ve been concerned about since purchasing my Platinum plan from Todd. I do need to add some zip ties to my car. Thanks for the info.

When my 2nd cable broke out of warranty, it was not covered:

I CALLED YOUR EXTENDED WARRANTY (GM PROTECTION PLAN) AND THE CABLE/BRACKET IS NOT COVERED.

THE PART IS $238.27 AND TH LABOR IS $175.00

I also have the platinum warranty.

Quick question on the broken cable.

I'm on my 2nd HTC. My 23 roof went up/down smooth and quiet. In my 26 down is smooth/quiet, up is a bit different. When the roof going up meets the A-pillars, one side gets there about 1/3 of a second faster and there is a audible "clunk" and (this might just be my anxiety) it feels a bit rough compared to my 23. I'm wondering if you noticed anything similar before your cable broke. Not sure what I'm describing is a potential issue or within normal parameters.

So when you say the 2nd cable was not covered, did the first one get replaced under warranty? The dealer that replaced mine yesterday told me there was a two year warranty on the new cable assembly regardless of the extended warranty.

I did not notice anything out of the ordinary, but there was a loud bang as I was lowering the top. When I tried to put the top up again I noticed the flap on the driver side was not retracting. A friend manually retracted it for me while i zip tied it to the bracket right behind the cable.

I have read somewhere that the tops can be adjusted when they are somewhat out of sync like yours may be. It may be worth a call to the dealer just to see.

Lucky you it was covered...I also have a 23, and I must say, I think about this happening every time I open the HTC and my zip ties are in the frunk...Fingers crossed, all good so far. Still can't believe GM hasn't issued a Bulletin for all HTC owners to get this fixed, since this has been an issue since the C8 was introduced and continue to be an issue and shouldn't cost the Owner a penny to fix, but it is since Warranty is up when it happens for many....Do you happen to know if the Dealership installed the exact same cable or was there a new design (more robust) cable?? If not, I'm sure it's only a matter of time before it breaks again? GM really dropped the ball on this one....

First one was one side, under warranty. 2nd was the other side, out of pocket.

Glad to hear it was covered. I’ve got 18k miles on my 23. What cable is breaking and how long of zip ties does one need to temporarily fix it?

That may have been worth a call to the warranty company just to try to understand their reasoning.

I asked that question and the service writer didn't know. She did mention the new part comes with a two year warranty however good that is.

I have decided from now on to keep the zip ties in the glove box not knowing if the frunk will open while the top is not working. I was at a car show when this happened and luckily the frunk was open.

Covered or not? In the Exclusions section of the contract is the following:

5. EXCLUSIONS FROM COVERAGE
THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT PAY OR REIMBURSE YOU FOR: A. ANY LOSS, DAMAGE OR EXPENSE CAUSED BY ACCIDENTS, ANY ALTERATIONS OR ADDITIONS TO THE COVERED VEHICLE OR THE PART, USE OF OVERSIZED OR UNDERSIZED TIRES OR WHEELS, ALTERATIONS OR ADDITIONS TO THE COVERED VEHICLE NOT AUTHORIZED BY ITS MANUFACTURER, ANY NONMANUFACTURER/NONFACTORY INSTALLED PARTS, THE FAILURE OF ANY PART NOT COVERED BY THIS AGREEMENT, ACCIDENTAL LOSS;

HARDTOP ASSEMBLIES, BUMPERS, TRIM, MOLDINGS, DOOR PANELS, DOOR HANDLES, DOOR LOCK CYLINDERS (OTHER THAN IGNITION LOCK CYLINDERS), TIRES, WHEELS, WHEEL RIMS, WHEEL COVERS, WHEEL BALANCING, WHEEL ALIGNMENT (UNLESS THE WHEEL ALIGNMENT IS REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR OF A COVERED PART), BATTERIES (EXCEPT FOR HYBRID/ELECTRIC BATTERIES), WIPER BLADES, BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS, LIGHTS, FUSES, BULBS, FILTERS, LUBRICANTS, OR FLUIDS NOT REPLACED IN CONJUNCTION WITH A COVERED REPAIR, UPHOLSTERY, VINYL AND CONVERTIBLE TOPS, PAINT, BRIGHT METAL, SHEET METAL, FREEZE PLUGS, HEATER AND RADIATOR HOSES, EXHAUST SYSTEM, CATALYTIC CONVERTER;
The wording is certainly not very precise, especially as the phrase is "vinyl and convertible tops". That appears to be relevant to a soft convertible top, not to the HTC mechanism.

So, we have it getting covered sometimes and not covered other times.
