Shock replacement- now shocks inoperable, 80mph top speed
I hit a big pothole in my 2005 C6
and was told I needed a new front L shock and tie rod. Got the parts on parts geek for cheap - money is tight right now.
its driving fine but I now how a dash message: shocks inoperable and top speed 80mph. I in fact can’t drive over 80 mph as I’ve tested it.
How do I fix this issue? Would it be easier to trick the computer or to replace it with a different shock?
is there something wrong with the shock I bought? I have a base C6 so I thought and ordered the soft ride version. I’ve attached an image here. I remember there was a sport one for the same price ($140), but I thought that wouldn’t be compatible.
can anyone tell me how to fix this or a link to another shock as I feel my mechanic will put it on for low cost and I can return the other. Or the process of tricking the computer.
Do you have mag ride (option code f55)? Sounds like that can be your issue with the shocks inop code if you replaced it with non mag ride shock.
You would not get that code unless you have the F55 suspension. Look at the build list in your glove box. You can get a shock simulator that plugs into the connector to make the code go away but it's going to handle funny with one mismatched shock, The OE mag ride shocks are not easy to find but there is a Chinese shock on Amazon that claims to be a direct replacement.
You need to look at the RPO sticker on your car to find what magnetic suspension your car has. If it is FE2, Rock Auto has the proper replacement shock.

I appreciate the reply. Would you by chance be able to send me the links to the shock simulator and/or Chinese shock on Amazon?

What he said...Personally I wouldn't want them mismatched at all...put a mag shock back on or change them all out with standards type shocks.....Good luck.
When I bought my 07 last spring, I made sure to get it without the Mag Ride suspension because of the issues I've read on here about them when they get old. Z51 for the win! (sorry about your bad luck)!

thanks for the reply. It’s actually been handing pretty fine. I’ll replace it if I have to, but how difficult is the process of just having the code turned off? How much money would it cost and where would I even go to do it? Thanks!

Plugging in a shock simulator is easy although I've seen claims that they burn up periodically. If you just cleared the code it would come right back. Someone with a GM Tech !! or equivalent could take the F55 option out of the programing but then the other 3 shocks would not work.
