The glove box lock cylinder my 2003 C5 is starting to fail, the latch still works. I have seen latch and lock assembly on Ebay, but no OEM key. It is my understanding the OEM key is need to remove the cylinder . A seller said any key will do I find that had to believe. Anybody know th truth
You guys use the lock? And keep valuables in a car with that much breakable glass and easily pried open doors and panels?
But also in for an answer on the key specificity.
I never have locked the glove box. The Locking cylinder is failing. After I have opened the glove box (I seldom do) when I try to close it sometimes the bracket that closes around then bar on the car fails to the close position and the glove box will not close. I have removed the latch and the lock and haven able to release the bracket
I have tried to remove the cylinder by using the key based on videos on you tube. If the lock just broke I would not care, but it locked up after opening is the problem
What makes no sense here is that you have never locked your glove box. I will make the bet that previous owners never did either…
in fact, I’ve never met anyone that ever locked their glove box. I’m sure some do, but they’re likely few.
so how does a lock cylinder wear out if it was never locked and rotated? More likely it’s just lightly corroded and jammed. I would first try lubricating the lock with silicone spray lube into the keyway, saturate it well. Paper towels at the ready. Spray some in the back side too where you can see the cylinder. Then insert the key and pull it back out several times to distribute the lube into the pins. Then insert and rotate a bit, then back off. repeat. Slowly work the lube into the mech. YMMV.

You make a good point and are probably right. I may not be explain my problem correctly. I will try again A few days ago I opened the glove box to put toll transponder in the box. When I closed the box it would no latch. When I examinedt he latch I saw the bracket that closes on the horizontal rod in the top of the glove box flipped down as if had closed the rod. I removed the latch assembly and started to move and piece I could. Somewhere it that process the bracket returned to the open position and I was able to close the box. In the near future I am going to remove the latch assemble lubricate with silicone spray and see if it fixes the issue.
thanks to every body that is trying to help me fix this.
