A friend has been using automatic transmission fluid in his power steering no problems so far. I have been using power steering fluid in mine with no particular brand name. What brand and type of fluid have you had good experience with in your power steering system.
thanks in advance
So I've used ATF, but went back to AI to double check if a better solution is out there. Here's that response, for what its worth.
For a 1970 Corvette, the factory specification was essentially automatic transmission fluid (ATF) in the power steering system, not dedicated modern power steering fluid.
A good choice today is:
Dexron III/Mercon ATF (widely available and very compatible with older GM systems)
Valvoline DEX/MERC ATF
Castrol Transmax DEX/MERC
Mobil ATF D/M
ACDelco Dexron-compatible ATF
If your steering system is original or has older seals, I would avoid:
Universal power steering fluids unless the manufacturer specifically says they are compatible with older GM systems.
Synthetic fluids if the system has never used them and is prone to minor seepage (though many owners use synthetics successfully).
For a classic Corvette that sees occasional use, many restorers and Corvette specialists still prefer a conventional Dexron III-compatible ATF because it most closely matches what GM intended.
Good post can someone tell my what fluid I should use in my 78???
Hmmm never thought about using tranny fluid what would be the trade off for using it??

Out of curiosity I looked at the different years and what the recommendation was: The '68 doc doesn't have lubrication service info but the '69 to '71 say this:
'72 to '76 only mention Dexron while '77 to '79 only say P/S fluid. '80-82 docs don't have lubrication info.
We used to have Jim Shea here to tell us to use only the AC Delco power steering fluid. It's not that difficult or expensive to get it mail order. He was THE guy for our steering systems. Seem to remember he was a designer on the system for GM. You can do a search.

My cap says "use approved fluid"..
Straight from the '76 owners manual....
"Add GM power steering fluid or automatic transmission fluid DEXRON II as necessary to bring level into proper range on oil filler cap indicator depending on fluid temp"
