South Carolina roads question
I'm in Charleston right now for the eclipse. Afterwards we're heading back to the Raleigh-Durham area. We're seeing a lot of speculation that I-26 and I-95 are going to be slammed after the event. Is there an alternate route that we could use if it looks like those turn into parking lots?
Does 52 up to 15 make sense? What are the roads like?

I 26 and 95 are horrible on a normal day. download the Waze app on your phone. I was coming home from Hilton Head last weekend and it gave us alternate routes to avoid wrecks on 95 and on 26 on two occasions.

I'm from SC but don't know the low country back highways well, I'd use Waze. I agree though that 26 and 95 will be hell, and that 52 will be mostly fine.
You do need to trust Waze even if it seems to make no sense sometimes.

Depending how quickly you want to return to RDU area, there are some great places to stop and take in the local scenery (and give your Vette a suspension/steering workout), taste the flavor and miss most of the hell on the interstates.
If you haven't been to his new Charleston address, head up to Goose Creek and take 52 to St. Stephens and Kingstree, then head northeast on SC 261 to Hemingway. You'll want to stop at the homebase of Scott's BBQ. Once you are in Hemmingway, turn north onto SC Hwy 51 and head north to Johnsonville (yea the brauts) then cut over on US 378 to SC Hwy 41. You'll stay on this all the way to Lumberton in NC and then hit I-95 for a short distance to I295 south of Wade, NC and then take US 401 all the way to RDU area. You'll come in around Garner.
Or you can Waze it.

We ended up going 52 to 301 to 501 to I-74 and had mostly clear sailing except for passing through some towns at 35 mph. When we crossed over I-95 it was crawling.
