Default Road Trip / Tail of the Dragon

This weekend the wife and I are going to be taking a road trip in the C7 GS: home (Tampa-ish) -->Tail of the Dragon --> National Corvette Museum --> Pro Football HOF --> Charolotte Speedway / NASCAR HOF --> home. Should be a great trip.

Looking for thoughts from those that have driven Tail of the Dragon and any input you might have.

I'm guessing by your route and Tampa location, you'll be making a week of it? Do not go to the Dragon on the weekend - it will be the worst experience of your life. Go during the week, you will be able to sightsee it much better with less worry of bikes and center line crossers. Speaking of, unless you want to extend your stay and visit the Blount County Magistrate, keep your tires right of the center line and watch your speed.

Sounds like a nice trip, especially the visit to Canton. Enjoy it and thanks in advance for contributing to the Charlotte region economy.

We're making a long weekend of it - not a whole week. Leaving Thursday afternoon and getting back Monday night. We don't plan to stay long in any one place. Should be arriving at Tail of the Dragon Friday late morning / mid-day. Still a problem? Or are you more referring to Saturday & Sunday as the nightmare days?

I'm no fan of the state, but until they move the HOF out of Canton, we're kinda stuck going there.

Totally true about forgetting the weekends. If you can go during the week, you will get a better experience hitting the twisties without running into sightseeing traffic and wanna be racers on the weekends.

I live 70 miles from the TN side of the Dragon. I love the road for driving / riding, worthless for sight seeing. I do not ride or drive the dragon on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, and usually not Monday. I prefer early morning mid week, especially if you want to push it at all. You will get a ticket if your caught over the yellow line. Same with more than 5 over. That said, law enforcement is much lighter the middle of the week early morning.

If your wanting sight seeing the Cherohala sky-way is much better road.

Not sure what way your headed up to the dragon. But coming up from FL, out side of Atlanta I would take 85 east to 985 east to North US129 (New Holland / Gainsville). Some of that road though the gauntlet rivals the dragon. Especially from Cleveland GA to Blairsville GA. This will put you in on the NC side of the Dragon, which is still North US 129. When I go to Daytona for bike week, I take US 129 South from Marryville down the dragon, and continue south on 129 until I get on US 441 south. You could actually pick up US 129 North in Macon GA.

Live a few miles from the Dragon and I agree.. Cherohala Skyway is a much better drive for sightseeing unless you just want to say you did the dragon and get picture of your car taken by several of the photo companies stationed along the route. Definitely not much to see except lots of curbs and stupid motorcyclists trying to prove a death wish.

I agree weekends is the worst way to go to the Dragon unless you just want to cruise and take it easy driving.
otherwise do early morning drive not much motorcycle or Tenessesse state troopers to worry about.

Cherohala Skyway is a great ride. So is NC 209 - The Rattler.

So you made the trip and new tires were the highlight? Surely you have photos....
