I am that old, and still remember my first carpenter job in the valley and how I couldn't see the traffic signal at the next intersection because of the smog.

In the summer, in San Diego, you can see the stuff drift down from LA like a kind of giant brown fog bank. It happened more than once to me, while out swimming at Pacific Beach, only about 198(!) miles away. I was bummed, since I was breathing at the time , and expected to continue on that way for a while.
