Default Official Southern California Caravan Information

Greetings, Forum Members-
My name is Hib Halverson. IÕm one of two Captains of the Southern California Corvette Caravan that is going to Nashville and Bowling Green for the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette Celebrations. ÒCaptÓ Paul Mariano and I were appointed by Roc Linkov, Chairman of the National Corvette Caravan, on January 26, to take over from Ted Sickles who was the former head of the So. Cal. Caravan and had to resign.

Chuck Felton, Corvette ForumÕs L.A./San Diego Events Coordinator has asked the Southern California Caravan (SoCalCar) Organizing Team to maintain a presence on this CF board. We appreciate ChuckÕs interest in the Caravan.

IÕm going to post all five issues of SoCalCarÕs e-newsletter starting with #1 which was issued at the end of January. After that, either ÒCaptÓ Mariano or myself will visit this Forum occasionally to answer questions. If you want to email me privately, send to <capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net>

YELLOW ALERT! SoCalCar eNews #1
2/1/03

Ha!

Bet you thought the Leadership of the Southern California Regional
Caravan had enlisted in the Army and gone to Iraq.

Not.

There *has* been a major change in that Leadership, however.

On January 26 Ted Sickles resigned as Captain of the Southern California

Caravan (SoCalCar). On January 27, Roc Linkov, Chairman of the 2003
National Corvette Caravan, appointed Paul Mariano of Goleta, California
and Hib Halverson of West Covina, California as Captains of SoCalCar.

If you're reading this email, you were on an email list of registered
participants and other interested parties maintained by the Southern
California Caravan. If you are a participant, you don't need to do
anything but read on. If you're an interested party and have not yet
registered...*what* are you waiting for! :) Go to the National Caravan
web site and register for the Corvette event of a lifetime: the 2003
National Corvette Caravan. Point your browser at: http://www.nationalcorvettecaravan.com/index2.shtml

New Captains, Mariano and Halverson, are hard-at-work, overhauling the
organization of the Southern California Caravan. Their prime directive
in
the short-term is to significantly improve communications between the
Caravan leadership and the Caravanners registered to drive to Bowling
Green with the Southern California group. On the SoCalCar web page ( http://caravan.corvettemuseum.com/californiasouthern/ ) you'll find
updated contact information for Captains and Area Coordinators. You can
expect the Caravan itinerary and guidelines to be posted in the near
future. Those documents are in the final approval stage now. Capt.
Mariano is moving ahead rapidly with the Caravan Route Instructions and
maps. Capt. Halverson is working on web site content, Caravan Guidelines

and researching two-way radios. Halverson is also going to pre-run the
first day's route in "Barney" his purple '95 ZR-1 one day next month
with
the objective of doing a recon of some sections of old Route 66 which
might get added into the Caravan route. The Leadership is working on
sponsors for various lunches and receptions during the five-day trip.
We're working on having a T-shirt specific to SoCalCar. Basically, a lot

of cool stuff is going on.

The Captains are looking for participant input on the two-way radio
issue. In the past, the standard of two-way radio communications in most

on-road Corvette events has been Citizen Band (CB) radios, however, in
the last few years, newer Family Radio Service (FRS) and General Mobile
Radio Service (GMRS) equipment has become popular. Both have a number of

technical advantages for caravan use, mainly that they are less
susceptible to radio frequency interference (RFI) and they have a higher

quality sound because they transmit a UHF-FM signal rather than an HF-AM

signal. On the other hand, there is a rather large, installed-base of
Citizen Band equipment out there. In the near future SoCalCar leadership

will announce its decision along with the proper channels to monitor
during the caravan. In preparation for making that decision, the
Captains
would like your input, if you have an opinion. The question: would you
prefer CB, FRS or GMRS? If you want to respond to this poll, email to
"Capt." Hib Halverson at capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net

Well, that's it for now. We just wanted to let you know about the change
in management and what we were doing to get the Caravan organization
rolling again.

You can reach either of the Caravan Captains or an Area Coordinator in
your area by going to our page on the web at: http://caravan.corvettemuseum.com/californiasouthern/ and then clicking
on the contact/volunteers link.

Thanks for reading and have a nice weekend.

SoCal Caravan eNews #2
2/13/03

Well....when we last wrote you all, we'd just taken the job as the new Captains of the Southern California Regional Caravan.

After about two weeks on the job, we better understand what needs to be done and are hard-at-work, getting the SoCalCar organization refired, turned-around and headed in the right direction.

First of all...Caravan registration. There's been some discussion amongst Caravan Captains around the country about the incorrect assumption made by some people, who have bought tickets for Chevrolet's Nashville Celebration, that in buying those tickets they've automatically registered for the Caravan, too. That is not the case. If you're going to Nashville with the Southern California Caravan, have Nashville tickets but haven't separately registered for the Caravan, please do so now at https://www.corvettemuseum.com/caravan/registration/registration.shtml

Secondly...hotels. The latest intel is that there are virtually no hotel, motel or B&B rooms left in the immediate Bowling Green area so, other than the few cancellations one might have the luck to find, Caravaners are going to stay in Nashville or in other towns outside the vicinity of Bowling Green. If you are looking for lodging either along the Caravan route, in Bowling Green or at Nashville, contact SoCalCar's quasi-official travel agent, Ron Cohen at Gorilla Travel: 818/223-0400, FAX 818/223-0410, or ron @gorillatravel.com

One of the first goals we set was to update content on our web site at http://caravan.corvettemuseum.com/californiasouthern/. We've been working on that. You'll find an up-to-date itinerary, courtesy of Capt. Paul Mariano, a better listing of options available along the route and in Bowling Green for lodging, contact info for Gorilla Travel, along with our "Top Ten Rules" of caravaning and Capt. Hib Halverson's comprehensive, "Caravaner's Guide". Our intent is to continue to use this web page as one of our channels of communications with you. Thanks to Frank Smith at CV Design Studios who is volunteering his time as the SoCalCar webmaster.

Since our last email to this list a couple of weeks ago, we've had a fair amount of comment on our intent to alter our route slightly in certain areas to include some driving on sections of old US 66. I'm happy to announce that two sections of old 66 are now part of the route. They are, in southeastern California, National Trails Highway, between the Ludlow exit on Interstate 40 and the Mountain Springs Rd. onramp to I-40 and, in western Arizona, State Route 66 between Kingman AZ and exit 139 on I-40. We are considering adding a third section of old 66 somewhere in New Mexico. If you have first-hand knowledge of parts of old 66 in New Mexico that are near I-40 and do not detour far from I-40, please, contact Hib Halverson by private email.

The radio poll...right now it's running about 3:2 in favor of CB. We're still trying to decide if we are going to use CB or FRS/GMRS two-way radio on the Caravan. If you have an opinion, please, let us know.

The most recent information we have is there are about 130 cars registered for the Southern California Caravan.

Lastly, there has been some rumor about persons not registered for the Caravan wanting to join us for all or part of the first day's trip to Flagstaff Arizona. Unfortunately, there will be no unregistered cars in the Caravan when it rolls out of the Best Western in Rancho Cucamonga. Please, invite as many as your fellow club members or friends to come "see you off", but if they are not registered as Caravan participants; they're not going to be able to tag along.

Well, that's it for now. Thanks for reading.

Default Re: Official Southern California Caravan Information

SoCal Caravan eNews #3
2/26/03

The Southern California Caravan Organizing Team has a number of
announcements to make:

1)The Pomona Valley Corvette Association, through a generous donation of
$500 to our sponsorship program, has been named the "Presenting Sponsor"
of our "Driver's Guide" which will be distributed to every Caravan
participant about three weeks before the event. The Driver's Guide, an
8.5x11 booklet, will be full of driver's information, route instructions,
maps and Caravan-related advertisements. The PVCA, as our departure
point's "home club," will also provide volunteers who will put-on a
reception on Saturday night before the Caravan leaves on Sunday June
22nd. The SoCalCar Organizing Team would like to thank "Chief" Ansel
Boyce, President of PVCA, and PVCA Member Brent Hicks for facilitating
the PVCA's support of the Caravan. We also like to thank "Lt." Elora
Stidham for taking over the leadership of the PVCA Saturday Night Party
"Committee".

2) The first day's lunch will be in Kingman, Arizona. Like the 1999
Caravan, we will stop at the Old Powerhouse Visitor Center in Kingman,
however, unlike 1999, we've implemented a plan which should prevent some
of the problems we had getting food service in a timely manner. We did
this by lengthening the stop by 30 minutes and changing the departure
route. You'll get-off I-40 at exit 48, turn right and proceed to the Old
Powerhouse. There are two places to get food in the immediate area. If
they become congested, all you need do is continue eastbound on Andy
Devine Av./AZ State Route 66 which we will take northeast bound out of
Kingman. Along that road are numerous places to eat and you have your
choice. The Caravan will reform on AZ SR66 outside Kingman at a location
that will be revealed at a later date. We'd like to thank "Cmdr." Ralph
Snow for the work he's put into making the Kingman lunch happen and the
work he's doing on dinner in Tucumcari NM.

3) The evening reception at our first overnight stop, Flagstaff Arizona,
is being sponsored jointly by Chevrolet and the Route 66 Car Club of
Flagstaff. This event will take place Sunday night from 7-9 PM, after we
arrive in Flagstaff at our HQ in "Flag", the Days Inn. There will be
"finger foods", soft drinks and a no host bar with discount prices. We'd
like to thank "Lt."John James of Corvette Club Santa Barbara and Chuck
Harrington of Chevrolet's Thousand Oaks, California office for making
those donations possible.

4) At the start of SoCalCar, on Sunday June 22nd, we'll have "air cover"!
Our good friends at Goodyear, the last Great American Tire Company, will
put the Airship, Spirit of America, up over the Caravan departure point.
No doubt, there will be some kind of TV coverage going on from the
Goodyear Blimp.

5) We've solved the "Caravan Flags and Decals" problem. You can order
Caravan Flags and static-cling decals on the web at http://64.35.110.237/corvettecaravan/merchandise.asp

6) The SoCalCar Organizing Team would like to thank Dan Cook at Envisage
Design Labs for stepping-up to sponsor all of these electronic
newsletters. Look for our "Caravan News" e-letters about every two weeks
up until June 22nd.

7) "Capt." Hib Halverson has been named to drive the Caravan Lead Car. We
may have a "celebrity" Grand Marshall who, if he/she accepts our
invitation, will drive the first car out of the departure point and will
lead for part of the run over to Kingman, but Halverson, in his infamous,
purple ZR-1, will be the operational leader until the Caravan arrives in
northwestern Texas. At that point, other Caravan Captains will take over
Lead Car duties.

That's it for the major announcements. Watch our Caravan Newsletters for
more later.

On to some of the other interesting Caravan tidbits.

Our radio poll, which we are using to decide what will be the official
two-way radio system for the Southern California Caravan, is still
underway. Right now, it's a pretty even split between Citizen's Band (CB)
and the General Mobil Radio Service (GMRS) equipment. If you have a
preference and have not let us know what it is, please do by return email
to <capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net>

If you haven't been to the SoCal Caravan web site at http://caravan.corvettemuseum.com/californiasouthern/
take a look, ASAP. There have been many changes to the information on the
site including the itinerary page and the Top 10 Safety rules page. At
our web page you'll find lots of useful Caravan details. Check there once
a week for updated information.

We are looking for a volunteer to video tape the Caravan. This request
comes from the National Corvette Caravan HQ. The National Corvette
Museum, organizer of the entire Caravan program, wants to produce a video
presentation of the 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette Caravan. It will be
made-up of video submitted by the Regional Caravans. The person
volunteering for this task must own video equipment of advanced-amateur
or near-professional grade and must have some experience doing video
coverage of Corvette events such as club runs or caravans. The SoCalCar
Organizing Team will supply the blank media. The camera person must be
willing to give the original tapes to the NCM. In return, the museum will
provide copies of his/her tape along with a copy of the finished product.
Anyone interested in volunteering for this job, please contact Capt. Hib
<capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net>.

Right now SoCalCar stands at 177 Corvettes. Of those, 135 will go from
the start on Sunday June 22. The rest either join us between the start
and Tucumcari NM.

If you have questions, email Capt. Paul <vettltd@aol.com>

Thanks for reading!

SoCal Caravan eNews #4
3/8/03

We know, we know, we just put out #3 and here we are, again. But,
heck....whenever we get Caravan news....you get it, too!

>>>Top stories:
Bowing Green KY (March 7)--The National Corvette Museum announced today
that total registrations for the National Corvette Caravan have topped
6000 people.

Goleta CA (March 8)--The Southern California Caravan Organizing Team
announces that registrations for the Southern California Caravan have
topped 310 participants, 166 Corvettes and a small squadron of minivans.
Registrations have come from all over California, Arizona and New Mexico
along with Australia and Austria.

Goleta CA (March 8)--The SoCalCar Organizing Team is, also, proud to
announce new sponsors of our event. We're grateful to have Crest
Chevrolet of San Bernardino and Graham Chevrolet of Santa Barbara
on-board, supporting our Caravan. We also want to thank Corvette Club
Santa Barbara and Corvettes West for stepping-up with some financial
help. Lastly, we welcome State Farm Insurance of Goleta for their
assistance. These new sponsors join Chevrolet, the Pomona Valley Corvette
Association and Envisage Design Labs in helping make your Caravan
possible.

>>>Money, money, money.
We've been asked about how we raise money and what we will do with it.
First off, the money you pay to register for the Caravan? That goes to the
National Corvette Museum to cover the costs of operating the National
Caravan organization. The Regional Caravan organizations are responsible
for their own finances. In short, we raise money through sponsorships,
most of which are in the form of cash. All members of the SoCalCar
Organizing Team are volunteers and they are attempting to cover the
expense of organizing this event with money donated by sponsors. If the
money isn't sponsored, it comes out of the volunteers pockets. This money
underwrites the cost of organizing and operating the Caravan. Typical
expenses are: office supplies, postage, printing, graphic arts service,
food and soft drink service on Saturday night before the Caravan leaves,
telephone expenses, team vehicle expenses incurred during pre-caravan
route recons and some equipment used by Caravan Captains during the
event. Any money left over after the Caravan Organizing Team is disbanded
will be donated to the National Corvette Museum. Sponsorship donations
are tax deductible because of the National Corvette Museum's non-profit
status. All of these sponsorships will receive recognition in the
"Driver's Guide" we will distribute to all participants of the SoCal
Caravan. This will be an 8.5x11 booklet full of driver's information,
route instructions, maps and advertisements. Any individual or group
interested in being a sponsor of the Southern California Corvette Caravan
should contact "Capt" Paul Mariano vettltd@aol.com for more information.

>>>Nashville
Chevrolet released an update on activities at Nashville. As many SoCalCar
participants are taking-in the Nashville events, we thought we'd pass-on
some of what the Chevy said. The countdown to the Corvette 50th
Anniversary Celebration stands at four months and anticipation is running
hot. To quench your thirst for information, the Corvette 50th Celebration
(the Nashville people) have offered-up descriptions of more than 20
activities on its web site at http://www.corvette50th.com. Here's a sampling of
the activities that will be available:
* Engineering and Design Presentations -- Call it the "America's Sports
Car Summit." With names such as Hill, Peters, Cooksey, Burton, Baldick
and more, the 50th Anniversary Celebration will be just that. Key
Corvette engineers, designers and executives will share their history
with America's favorite sports car through personal accounts and
anecdotes. See the full list of presenters in the Engineering and Design
Presentations section at Corvette50th.com
* Unique GM-Owned Corvette Display -- Rare Corvettes come out of hiding
for a display that likely won't be repeated. Bring your camera for this
unique glimpse of Corvette history
* The Goodyear Blimp -- High above the celebration of one American
icon, another legend in transportation history will look down on the
festivities and the Southern California Caravan will have it's "own
blimp", the Goodyear Airship "Spirit of America", circling our departure
point on the morning of June 22nd.
* The National Corvette Museum's "50 Years of Corvette" display will
show 50 Corvettes, one from each production model year -- 1953 to 2003
-- in chronological order. There is no better photo opportunity than a
shot of you in front of every generation and model year of Corvette. That
photo op waits for you in Nashville. We should add that one of our own,
SoCalCar's San Diego Area Coordinator, "Lt" Bill Bennet, was asked by NCM
to put his '58 in that display. Congratulations, Bill!
* Corvette Parade -- What celebration is complete without a parade? The
50th Anniversary Celebration parade theme isÉwell, Corvettes! Check out
the Parade section of Corvette50th.com for more information.
* C5-R Racing Display -- See the LeMans winning Corvettes on display and
rub shoulders with top C5-R driver, and a true Corvette enthusiast in his
own right, Andy Pilgrim.
* There will also be displays by Bose and Goodyear, small-stage
entertainment, guest speakers, a QVC live broadcast and more. Additional
information can be found at http://www.Corvette50th.com

>>>Registration
One aspect of the 2003 Caravan which is different from the 1994 and 1999
Caravans is how participants are registered. This year, individuals are
registered, not cars, so if there are two people in a car, for both to
take part in the Caravan, both need to register. There will be no
admission to any SoCalCar events to persons whom are unregistered.
Unfortunately, there will be no exceptions to this rule. If you have a
situation where the person driving the car is registered but the
passenger is not, please have your passenger register for the Caravan at https://www.corvettemuseum.com/caravan/registration/registration.shtml
There are a couple of other registration issues you need to know about.
If you want a National Corvette Caravan dash plaque, you must register
before May 1, 2003. Also, in the event that you have to cancel your
Caravan registration, refunds are available only up to May 1, 2003. If
you have to cancel after that, you forfeit your money.

>>>Caravan merchandise
National Caravan Flags and static-cling decals are available at http://caravan.corvettemuseum.com/mdse. Additional Caravan "stuff" is
available on the National Caravan site at http://www.nationalcorvettecaravan.com

>>>Radio Poll
Based in input get from Caravan participants, we know the ability for
Caravaners to communicate with other SoCalCar participants along with
small groups of Caravaners who are driving together and wish to talk via
two-way radio to each other is an important aspect of the Caravan
experience. Another use of two-way radio is for Caravan leadership to
occasionally pass information to the rest of the Caravan.

As you've guessed by now, once again, it's time for our "famous" radio
poll! We have to admit, there's almost as much activity and intrigue in
our radio poll as there is in the United Nations General Assembly these
days...well almost as much. We mentioned the poll in our last newsletter
and, back then, it was running about a 50/50 split between persons
wanting CB to be the SoCalCar radio system-of-choice and persons wanting
FRS/GMRS.

>>>Radio Tech.
Most everyone knows what a CB is. Some may know what the Family Radio
Service (FRS) is but few have heard of GMRS. In the past, the benchmark
for two-way radio communications in most on-road Corvette events has been
Citizen Band (CB) radios, however, in the last few years, newer FRS along
with FRS's more powerful sibling, General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS)
equipment has become popular. Both have a number of technical advantages
for caravan use, mainly that they are less susceptible to radio frequency
interference (RFI) and they have a higher quality sound because they
transmit a UHF-FM signal rather than an VHF Lo-AM signal. On the other
hand, there is a rather large, installed-base of Citizen Band equipment
out there.

>>>More on the Poll
The last newsletter provoked more responses to our poll and the lead has
shifted to CB. Nevertheless, other Regional Caravans, with which we will
join with on our final two days of the trip, GMRS has been selected and
the National Caravan leadership is pushing GMRS. The two Southern
California Caravan Captains will have both types of equipment in their
cars. We're not quite sure right now, how this poll is going to end, but
we will announce a decision about April 15th...just in time for you to
take your tax refund and go buy a radio, if you don't already have one.
At the same time we'll announce the proper channels to monitor during the
caravan. In preparation for making that decision, the Captains continue
to need your input. If you have an opinion on the choice of radio
services and you haven't made that opinion known, yet, here's the
question: would you prefer CB, FRS or GMRS? Please respond via private
email to "Capt." Hib Halverson at capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net

>>>Radio Source
For those ready to purchase radio equipment, be it CB, FRS or GMRS, there
is a communications retailer in Southern California which is operated by
Corvette owners and has experience with setting-up Corvettes with proper
two-way radio equipment and antennas. The Solder Joint, Inc., run by
Corvette owner and PCC member, Mark Foster, can meet the two-way radio
needs of Corvetters wanting to communicate with each other on runs or
Caravans. Solder Joint has inexpensive FRS radios for the budget-minded.
It has GMRS handitalkies (HTs) ranging from a 2-channel, 2-watt unit for
$125 to $240 for a killer, 16-channel, 4-watt Maxon, industrial-strength
GMRS HT. Solder Joint, also, has a wide range of CB radios, both mobile
and HTs. It sells the Cobra, Uniden and Ranger brands, all of which have
models suited for use in a Corvette. Solder Joint sells an exclusive line
of Corvette antenna brackets for C4 and C5s which require no holes in
body work, can be removed for shows and offer a reliable, durable and
robust mounting for a three- or four-foot fiberglass whip antenna. These
brackets are black-powder-coated and bolt to your rear license plate
mounting providing a good ground and a robust platform for the antenna.
"Capt" Hib Halverson, has just outfitted the Caravan's Lead Car with a
Solder Joint bracket and antenna system which should improve the
performance of the car's existing CB. If your Vette has a two-way radio
need, the Solder Joint, Inc. might be able to help. Email:
sales@thesolderjoint.com Web: http://www.thesolderjoint.com Tel: 800 914
4680.

>>>We Gotta Talk.
Lastly, our "speaker's bureau"....we are always glad to talk to Corvette
Clubs about the Southern California Corvette Caravan. In the last couple
of weeks, we've met with the PVCA and CCSB. We're doing Red Line
Corvettes on March 11. If there are other club people out there who'd
like a representative of the SoCalCar to speak at one of their meetings,
right now, we have speaker service available in most of Southern
California. If you have an interest in this, please have your Club
President contact "Capt." Hib Halverson at capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net
or 626-810-2588.

Well, that's it for now. Thanks for reading.

YELLOW ALERT! SoCal Caravan eNews #5
3/12/03

>>>TOP STORIES:
Fontana CA (March 12). In a joint statement issued at the California Speedway, the track and the Southern California Caravan Organizing Team announced the California Speedway in Fontana, California will serve as the staging and starting point for the Southern California Corvette Caravan.

Speedway spokesperson, Justin Bentley, said, "We're happy to have the Corvette Caravan starting from the Speedway. There's plenty of room for all the Caravan cars and any people who come to send-off the Caravan. It'll be a beautiful Sunday in June, the Blimp will be overhead, we'll hear road racing Corvettes in the background, this will be great! For those not going on the Caravan and who can come to send-off the Caravaners, we have our Historic Sports Car Festival going on. You can make a full day of Corvette activities after the Caravan leaves. There will be vintage road racing Corvettes on our track and the tickets for the event include a parade lap around the track during the day."

"Capt." Hib Halverson of the SoCalCar Organizing team said, "This is going to be killer! 'Capt.' Paul Mariano, the rest of the Team and myself are gratified that the Speedway has decided to join in sponsoring the SoCalCar by allowing us to use this beautiful facility. What better place to start the 50th Anniversary Corvette Caravan than this track made famous by Winston Cup, IRL and other racing series? Heck, it's also sponsored by GM as Pontiac is the Official Pace Car. I'd like to thank Justin and the rest of the Speedway staff for considering our request and supporting the Corvette hobby. I'd also like to thank "Lt. Cmdr" Ralph Snow of our Team for providing the initial contact at this cool racetrack."

Camarillo CA (March 11) The Southern California Caravan Organizing Team is proud to announce that Red Line Corvettes of Camarillo CA, in its meeting tonight, voted unanimously to become a sponsor of the Southern California Caravan at the $500 level. Additionally, Red Line Treasurer, Dave Madison, became an individual sponsor of the Caravan at the $300 level. The Organizing Team appreciates the generosity of Red Line Corvettes and its members. We should add that Red Line has 18 cars going to Nashville/BG with us. Right now, that's fully 10% of the Caravan. Thanks Red Line!

West Covina (March 11) The SoCalCar OT would like to welcome Software Liaison of Irvine, California aboard as a sponsor at the $300 level. Software Liaison is owned and operated by Caravan Participant, Sherry Maples. The company specializes in customized accounting software and software training. Software Liaison consultation provides both time-saving and cost-saving solutions to accounting program needs. >>>RADIO POLL
It's still going. We spoke to Red Line Corvettes last night and they are a FRS/GMRS Club. The addition of their input to the poll skews the results back towards FRS/GMRS handitalkies. If you haven't voted for either CB or FRS/GMRS and you have an opinion, send it via private email to "Capt" Hib Halverson capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net.

>>>CALIFORNIA SPEEDWAY
Our Caravan starts from the track at Fontana. Is that cool or what!

What's also pretty cool is what happens if you can't go on the Caravan but you come to the send-off. The California Speedway has a sweet deal for you. The weekend of the Caravan's departure, June 21-22, is Fontana's "Historic Sports Car Festival". This is a vintage road racing event taking place on the Speedway's infield road course. Vintage racing Corvettes and Chevrolet-powered CanAm cars will be running all day Saturday and Sunday. Ticket "packages" include two tickets, pit and paddock passes, vehicle parking pass and a vehicle pass for a "parade lap" around the track. This is a great deal! In fact, "Capt" Paul and "Capt" Hib decided, if they weren't running your Caravan, they'd be sitting on the tail gate of "Capt" Hib's "ratty old Malibu" sipping a beer and watching the races. Ticket packages are $30 for Sunday and $20 for Saturday. Also, a single-ticket package is also available that gets you both days for one person for $30. Want to learn more? Look at the California Speedway web site at http://www.californiaspeedway.com or call the track at 909 429 5300. Also--this gets better--if you are in a whole group who can't do the Caravan but want to be there for the send-off and then watch the races, the Speedway has a group ticket plan for groups of more than 20 people. If you're interested in that, call Justin Bentley at the California Speedway, 909 429 5308.

We couldn't ask for a better spot to start our trip to Nashville and BG. California Speedway is on Cherry Avenue in Fontana. There is easy access to it from either I-15, I-10 or SR210. We'll stage in parking area #3. You turn in the main gate off Cherry, hang quick right and you're there. To depart, we'll go out the main gate, turn left and head up Cherry Avenue to I-15 North.

Sweet!

>>>METAL CARS
"Adm" Roc Linkov, the National Caravan Chairman, asked us to remind everyone interested in the Caravan that you don't need a Corvette to participate. While we'd like it to be all Corvettes, there are a few people that, for whatever reasons, are driving something other than a Corvette. We have several participants who are trailering their cars part of the way behind motorhomes. We have 20 Australians in a squadron of rented minivans. We may have some other support vehicles as well. So, if you got metal, bring it! We want you on our Caravan, whatever you drive.

The Southern California Caravan Organizing Team
Paul Mariano and Hib Halverson, Captains

quote: This is going to be a great event!! Any Idea who is buying lunch along the way??

During the first two days, paying for lunches will be the responsibility of the caravan participants. The lunch stop in Kingman AZ will be fully funded by participants. The choices will be several, from sit-down restrurants to fast food. The lunch on the second day will be subsidized, but not fully covered, by Galles Chevrolet in Albuquerque NM. It will be a group, catered affair. The lunches on days 3, 4 and 5 are being set-up by other Caravan Organizing entities. The SoCalCar's responsibility for planning ends just the other side of the Texas state line when we join up with the W. TX Caravan.

Hope that answers your question.

Regards,
Hib Halverson, Captain
Southern California Regional Caravan

Hib,

177 Corvettes! That's a number big enough to make your event an Event. Congrats on getting that kind of response. I know something that big can't be a one man show, it takes a lot of hard work, commitment and group participation. Continued success with the caravan. I can't make the trip back East, but I'm planning on participating in the caravan sendoff up here in NorCal.

SoCal Caravan News #6 3/28/03

>>>TOP STORIES
>>West Covina CA (March 28)--In a joint statement this morning, the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA), the world-wide trade organization for businesses involved in the high-performance automotive aftermarket, and the Southern California Caravan Organizing Team announced SEMA has become a "Level 1" sponsor of the SoCal Corvette Caravan.

SEMA Vice President Carl Sheffer said, "Well...it's simple. It's the 50th Anniversary of the Corvette, one of the few cars in the world that's an American Icon. Since SEMA was founded in the early 1960s, Corvette owners have supported our members with their business. We want to give some of that back to the Corvette community. With SEMA's offices about 25 miles from the SoCal Caravan's start, helping out the California group seemed like a perfect match. On behalf of SEMA, I wish all the Caravaners a great trip."

"Capt" Hib Halverson of the SoCalCar Organizing Team said, "We're honored to have SEMA, which represents thousands of aftermarket companies and puts on the 'SEMA Show' in Las Vegas every year, involved in our sponsorship program. If it wasn't for corporate benefactors like SEMA and the other businesses who've stepped-up to support us, we wouldn't be able to give all the SoCal Caravaners a great event. Thanks to Carl Sheffer and everyone at SEMA for getting involved."

>>Goleta CA (March 27)--The Southern California Corvette Caravan departs the California Speedway on June 22nd, but there are "Feeder Caravans" starting from far-flung parts of California the day before. Such an event begins in Santa Barbara, about 150 miles west of the main group's starting point in Fontana, on Saturday, June 21st and it may well be the first, official group of cars in the National Corvette Caravan to begin the trip to Bowling Green. This bunch of Corvetters will get a rousing send-off luncheon/party put-on by Graham Chevrolet in Santa Barbara at 11 AM on the 21st. At 1 PM, Caravaners from the Central Coast and the Santa Barbara area will then depart for trip to the headquarters hotel in Rancho Cucamonga. The SoCalCar Organizing Team appreciates Dick Graham's willingness to commit his dealership to support our event.

>>Goleta CA (March 27)--The Southern California Corvette Caravan is grateful for the support of two more new sponsors. Gorilla Travel, the Caravan's travel agent, has stepped-up with a Level 2 Sponsorship. For nearly a year, Gorilla Travel, run by Corvette owner, Ron Cohen, has been assisting SoCal Caravaners in booking hotel space along the Caravan route and in Nashville and Bowling Green. Those needing hotel booking service should contact Gorilla Travel at 888 811 APES, or <ron@gorillatravel.com> or http://www.gorillatravel.com

Another new Level 2 Sponsor is Santa Barbara Bank and Trust, the Central Coast's premier financial institution. With Santa Barbara Bank and Trust you get the financial muscle of a large institution but with the service and attention to detail characteristic of a neighborhood bank. With Santa Barbara being the start of our Central Coast Feeder Caravan, it makes sense that the area's bank lends a helping hand to the SoCal Caravan.

>>Goleta CA (March 27)--The SoCalCar Organizing Team is pleased to announce that Galles Chevrolet of Albuquerque, New Mexico has agreed to sponsor the lunch stop on the second day of the Caravan. "Galles Chevrolet is the top-volume dealer in New Mexico," 'Capt' Paul Mariano said, "and was a great asset to our Caravan route." The Albuquerque lunch stop was the final major piece of the SoCalCar route itinerary to be put in place by the Organizing Team. We are glad Galles stepped-in help us out and we are relieved that we finally have this stop on the Caravan route finalized.

>>>OTHER NEWS
>>Details on the Santa Barbara Feeder Caravan
Dick Graham, owner of Graham Chevrolet, will get Central Coast caravaners off to a rousing start. On Sat. June 21st, Graham Chevrolet is throwing the send-off party for those leaving from Santa Barbara, Santa Maria, San Luis Obispo, and other nearby areas. All caravan participants and those Corvette fans wishing to see-off this Feeder Caravan, will meet at Graham Chevrolet, 301 S. Hope Ave. Santa Barbara at 11:00 AM for a catered lunch. Local media will be present to cover the festivities and the launch of the Caravan to Rancho Cucamonga at 1:00 PM. The group will stop in the Camarillo/Thousand Oaks area to pick up
twenty cars from the Redline Corvettes. Then, it is on to Simi Valley to pick up cars from the Simi Valley Club.
The ETA at Rancho Cucamonga is 4:00 PM. For more information on the Central Coast Feeder Caravan, contact Area Coordinator, Paul Mariano, at vettltd@aol.com

>>Monday Lunch at Galles
In short, Galles Chevrolet is "....saving our bacon," according to SoCalCar's "Capt" Paul Mariano. Galles Chevrolet's role is a "rescue mission" of sorts as the original dealer which expressed interest in sponsoring the Albuquerque stop prior to the change in the SoCal Caravan's leadership structure had a change of heart about three weeks ago. This left the Organizing Team scrambling for an alternative. Fortunately, Jay Goatcher, a Corvette owner in Santa Fe, New Mexico knew Galles had interest in "club oriented" events and passed that "intel" on to 'Capt' Hib Halverson. "Capts" Mariano and Halverson conferred and decided to contact the Galles folks. Luckily, they agreed to Paul Mariano's appeal for help. We look forward to lunch at Galles Chevrolet during the Caravan's visit to New Mexico. Again, the Caravan Organizing Team appreciates Galles' support.

>>How 'bout the Ride Back Home?
"Capt" John Rupp, of the Arkansas Caravan, has volunteered to lead a group through Southern Arkansas and Oklahoma on the return trip from Bowling Green to California. At this point, there is no formal plan for the run back home, but the following schedule, provided by "Capt" Rupp, might make an interesting and enjoyable part of that trip. Those interested in caravaning home would meet in Little Rock, Arkansas for an overnight on July 1st. John Rupp will pick-up the group there and lead a it over some of the most beautiful Corvette roads in that part of the country, virtually all of which are unknown to California Corvetters. This group would overnight somewhere in Oklahoma on Wednesday, July 2nd. then proceed to California on I-40 the next day. Those wanting to get involved with this plan, please let your SoCal Captains know and we will proceed with the planning.

>>The Radio Poll
We know we said we'd make our two-way radio announcement on April 15th, but we've had a number of questions about how soon we'd make up our minds. Responses to the poll have dropped off in the last week or so, leading us to believe, those who will give us an opinion have already done so. Currently the score is CB 34 and FRS/GMRS 44. We're going to move the cut-off date for the poll up to April 1st, so if you have an opinion on what kind of two-way communications system should be used by the SoCal Caravan, express that opinion ASAP in a private email to <capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net>

>>The Send-Off...Again
Just Remember, you don't have to be going on the Caravan to participate in the festive atmosphere of the Caravan's departure from California Speedway in Fontana. You can come out to the track at Fontana, send-off the SoCal Caravan, then spend a day at the vintage road races watching classic Corvettes on the California Speedways 2.8 mi. road course and take part in a pace-lap around the track. Admission to the Caravan send-off is free and special ticket prices for the vintage races and the pace lap are available from the Speedway. Information can be had from the Speedway's web site at http://www.californiaspeedway.com

>>Check the Web Site.
If you're not regularly visiting the SoCalCar web site at http://caravan.corvettemuseum.com/californiasouthern/ consider checking it once every couple of weeks. We periodically update the information there and recently, we added content about the SoCalCar's sponsors along with an update of our "Caravaner's Guide" article.

Well, that's it for now.
Thanks for reading.

Bowling Green KY (April 11)--Over 7,000 people have pre-registered for the National Corvette Caravan which is the kick-off event of the Corvette's 50th Anniversary celebration
activities during the week of June 23-30, 2003. Caravan registrants receive a Caravan
T-shirt, window decal, dash plaque, name tag and access to all NCM
activities in Bowing Green that week.

If you haven't registered for the Southern Calfornia part of the National Corvette
Caravan and 50th Anniversary activities, do so by clicking here: https://www.corvettemuseum.com/caravan/registration/registration.shtml

>>The Trip Back Home
We think ahead, don't we?
In eNewsletter #6 we mentioned that "Capt" John Rupp, of the Arkansas Caravan, has volunteered to lead a group through Southern Arkansas and Oklahoma on the return trip from Bowling Green to California. Those interested in caravaning home would meet in Little Rock, Arkansas for an overnight on July 1st. Capt Rupp will pick-up the group there and lead it over some of the most beautiful Corvette roads in that part of the country, virtually all of which are unknown to California Corvetters. After that the group will head home to California. The time to "sign-up" for this is now because Capt Rupp's and his people need time to make arrangements. If you want to be part of a caravan back home contact "Capt" Paul Mariano at vettltd@aol.com or call him at 805-967-3756.

>>Goodyear a Major Sponsor of the SoCalCar
West Covina CA (April 3)--The Southern California Corvette Caravan Organizing Team is proud to announce that the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. has joined the growing list of the SoCal Caravan's corporate sponsors. Bob Toth, Goodyear's Brand Marketing Manager for Auto Tires, said, "Goodyear has been OE on Corvette since 1978 and, obviously, has great interest in supporting many aspects of the Corvette's 50th Anniversary celebration. The Southern California Caravan will make one of the longest trips of the National Corvette Caravan's regional groups. Goodyear recognizes the historic event the Caravan is. Our Blimp will be overhead when that group departs California Speedway and our tires will be on most of the cars. We appreciate the support Corvette enthusiasts have given us and we are honored to be part of the Southern California Caravan."

"Capt" Hib Halverson of the SoCalCarOT said " 'Capt' (Paul) Mariano and I are happy to have Goodyear, Number One in Tires and the last big American tire company as a Level 1 sponsor of our event. Goodyear and Corvette have been a team for a quarter-century. Both the Caravan's Lead Cars run Goodyears, Eagle F1 GS-EMTs on 'Capt' Paul's '03 50th car and Eagle F1 Supercars on my ZR-1. I'm grateful for the support of Goodyear."

Besides sponsoring the SoCalCar, Goodyear is an integral part of Chevrolet's 50th Celebration in Nashville. Goodyear is also going to have its airships (the blimps) overhead at three different regional Caravan departures, ours in Fontana being one of them. So, when you form-up to leave the Speedway on Sunday June 22, make sure you look up and wave at the blimp.

If you are interested in buying a new set of Goodyears before you take-off for Bowing Green on the Caravan see your local Goodyear Tire retailer or visit http://www.eagleF1.com . If you are in or near the San Gabriel Valley area, we recommend Goodyear dealer, Tucker Tire Sales in Azusa. Ph: 626-331-1142.

>>Flowmaster, too
West Covina CA (April 2)--Flowmaster, Inc. is another, new Level 1 sponsor of the Southern California Corvette Caravan. One of the oldest manufacturers of high-performance street and racing mufflers. The "Exhaust Technology Company" has a track-record of supporting caravan type events such as the Hot Rod Power Tour and, for that reason, was a natural to help out with the SoCal Caravan.

Flowmaster makes "cat-back" exhaust systems to fit Corvettes from 86-03. It also makes direct replacement mufflers for 84 and 85s. Flowmaster's line of replacement mufflers fit many Corvette applications going back to C1s. On June 22 in our departure stage area at the California Speedway, if you scope-out the cars, you'll probably see more than a few with Flowmaster exhaust components on them, including "Capt" Hib Halverson Purple ZR-1 which will lead the Southern California Caravan. For more information on Flowmaster products, see your local Flowmaster exhaust dealer, call 600-544-4761 or visit http://www.flowmastermufflers.com

>>MSD a Sponsor, No Foolin'.
West Covina CA (April 1)--The Captains of the SoCalCar are happy to have Autotronic Controls Corporation, maker of the famous MSD brand of aftermarket ignition components for high-performance street and race cars, part of the list of businesses supporting our Caravan. MSD is joining us as a Level 2 Sponsor. MSD has been a benchmark for performance ignition parts for a generation. Seen in all kinds of racing from NASCAR Winston Cup to off-road trucks. MSD also manufactures a wide-variety of ignition components for street-driven Corvettes. Since 1997, "Capt" Hib Halverson has used MSD "Super Conductor" Spark Plug wires on his Caravan Leading ZR-1. For more information on MSD products for Corvettes see a MSD retailer, call 915-857-5200 or visit http://www.msdignition.com

>>Need Tile?
Goleta CA (April 1)--The Southern California Caravan Organizing Team is please to announce that The Tile Collection of Santa Barbara, run by Corvette owner Steve Petersen, has come on board as a Level 2 sponsor. Live in the Goleta/Santa Barbara area? Doing a home improvement or remodeling project? Does it involved tile? If so, the Tile Collection is the best place to go for our materials. They offers the best selection under one roof. A large inventory of ceramic and natural stone tiles is stocked. Expert design assistance as well as DIY guidance are available. Tile Collection is locally owned and operated since 1980. They are at: 518 E. Haley St., Santa Barbara, CA 93103. Ph: 805-963-8638.

>>Individual Sponsors
We are honored to have a small group of generous Corvette hobbyists and Caravan participants who've also decided to become SoCalCar sponsors. The most recent is Dean Humphrey of Camarillo. Thanks Dean!

>>Radio Poll
The winner is...FRS/GMRS. Family Radio Service and General Mobile Radio Service equipment will be the official two-way radio system of the Southern California Caravan. The score was GMRS/FRS 47 and CB 35. Interestingly, about a third of the Caravan participants voted in the poll. The SoCal Captains appreciate everyone's input. Picking FRS/GMRS as our system will work better with the some of the other Caravans will we join after crossing into Texas. Most of them are also going to be on GMRS.

FRS handitalkies (HT) are widely available and relatively inexpensive. They are often sold in pairs and prices can be as low as $60 for two. FRS HTs have a maximum output of 500 milliwatts so, while the equipment is relatively cheap; it's quite short-ranged. FRS HTs used inside a vehicle will have a range of 1/4-mile or less and are only useful in Caravans if the cars are quite close to each other. FRS radios require no license. As they are all HTs so there is nothing to install in your car, simply stick the radio in your shirt pocket, in the ash try or console box. Just remember to bring extra batteries. FRS radios require no license to operate.

GMRS, while still an individual or family communications system, is certainly not a hobby-radio service. It's intended for people who have a serious reason to communicate by radio...such as a Corvette caravan. GMRS radios are typically more expensive starting around $60 each and going up to $300 or so for commercial-grade handitalkies. GMRS HTs are quite a bit more powerful with at least 1W output and some have up to 5W output. To operate a GMRS legally you need be licensed though you don't have to have a license to buy or possess one. An inexpensive five-year license costs $75 and is renewable. Getting a license is pretty easy using the Federal Communications Commissions's licensing site at <http://wireless.fcc.gov/uls/>

There is a great deal of information on the web about FRS/GMRS and one really good resource is at <http://www.gmrsweb.com/gmrs.html>

For those looking for more information about FRS/GMRS radios or wishing to purchase such equipment, the SoCalCar Captains recommend "The Solder Joint" in Orange, CA. Run by Corvette owner, Mark Foster, The Solder Joint is experience in fitting Corvettes with many types of two-way radio equipment including GMRS, FRS CB and Amateur. You can contact The Solder Joint at 800-914-4680 or on the web at <http://www.thesolderjoint.com/>

CB, while not the choice of the Caravan, will still probably be used by a fair-sized group of people. The Caravan Leaders will also have CB equipment and, when possible, with "simulcast" transmissions of the most important caravan information over CB as well as GMRS.

As we get closer to the Caravan departure on June 22nd, we'll have more radio information as to what channels to monitor and how the Caravan Leaders will transmit information.

>>Simi Valley Corvettes.
We visited a meeting of Simi Valley Corvettes this week at the Carriage Cafe in Simi Valley. The Simi has four cars in the Caravan so far and will be part of the "Feeder Caravan" leaving Graham Chevrolet in Santa Barbara on the June 21st. Thanks for having us come by. We enjoyed the meeting and your club's hospitality.

>>Caravan merchandise
We're getting more requests for Caravan flags, decals and other merchandise. National Caravan Flags and static-cling decals are available at <http://caravan.corvettemuseum.com/mdse>. Additional Caravan "stuff" is
available on the National Caravan site at " TARGET="_blank">http://www.nationalcorvettecaravan.com>

>>National Corvette Caravan: the Home Video
We are looking for a volunteer to video tape the Caravan. The National Corvette Museum, organizer of the entire Caravan program, wants to produce a video of the 2003 50th Anniversary Corvette Caravan. It will be made-up of tape submitted by the Regional Caravans. The person volunteering for this task must use equipment of at least advanced-amateur grade and must have some experience shooting video coverage of car events such as club runs or caravans. The SoCalCar Organizing Team will supply the blank media. The camera person must be willing to give the original tapes to the NCM. In return, the museum will provide copies of his/her tape along with a copy of the finished product. Anyone interested in volunteering for this job, please contact "Capt" Hib at <capt_SoCalCar@earthlink.net>.

Thanks for reading.
