Moving from NJ to ?????? Help!!!
Looking to retire in the next year (age 55) and will be moving from NJ but not sure where. Was looking at some of the communities in Henderson, NV but open to some other warm suggestions. Looking to spend in the 300k-400k range for a 1fl (approx 2000 sqft) with 2 bedrooms and 2-3 car garage. Looking at maybe a gated community and not ruling out 55 and over.

My State is the best place to live on planet earth! $400 would buy a small palace here w/ a basement!

Only reason Texas doesn't float off is because Oklahoma sucks. . . j/k. It doesn't have beaches though. I'd recommend either Texas or Lousiana. Mississippi would be an idea as well. Anywhere down south is good. Texas has higher tax rates though. I have to retire in Texas by default due to the excessive amount of land my wifes family has other wise I'd be in South Carolina where my land is.

The housing here is super affordable. The summers are much more tame than the other states mentioned with comparable winters. 400k would get you a mansion on a good piece of land pretty close to the lake. Ive been places I like more and Ive been places I like a lot less like texas (not trying to slam you texas guys) If youre talking henderson vegas 400k isnt squat there the traffic is nuts and the place is always under construction. Have you ever considered a place like oregon? Coast is wonderful and the whether is great.

I have lived all over the world and most of the U.S. growing up as a military brat and spending 8 years in the Army myself.
I suggest you come visit the DFW area. It is a great place to shop and they have some of the best restaurants in the country here. If you ever need a part for something (just about anything you can think of) you will most likely be able to find it here locally.
If the heat doesn't bother you too much in the summer then DFW may be the place for you. You can live near Dallas if you prefer more of a Metropolitan area or you can live near the Fort Worth are if you prefer more of a Rural area.
Just come check it out

Only problem with living that close to Dallas is all the Dallas Cowboys fans.

2010c6,
A couple of other things I forgot to mention is:
1) They have a big airport here so it is easy to fly out if you want to go somewhere.
2) The Texas Motor Speedway is between Dallas and Fort Worth so if you like auto racing then it is a great place to watch a race.

Great place to visit wouldnt recommend living there. Like I stated earlier the traffic is horrible and the housing is expensive. If you like that type of area you may want to consider palm springs (although it is in cali and there are hippies everywhere) it is a great place to live. Also there are a few towns in AZ where the housing is more affordable and it still has that desert atmosphere. I would seriously reconsider Henderson/las vegas for retirement.

I live in a gated 55-over community west of Houston (Katy) - for
$250k you can get 2500+ sq ft, triple garage, upscale finishes + more.
LOTS of Corvette activities year-round here. Several such commuities in the Houston area.

You can pretty much find whatever you're looking for in Texas. Cancer? Houston. Barbecue? Texas. Airline hubs? Houston or Dallas. Scenic? Hill Country. Humidity? Gulf Coast. Dry heat? anywhere but the Gulf Coast. Personal income tax? Not in Texas. State legislature that only is in session 140 days every other year? Texas.
If you can't find it in Texas, it can't be found or you just don't need it.

I moved from NJ to SW Utah 5 years ago. Absolutely no regrets. If you like
the outdoors there is no place better. They golf 320 days a year, at least. We hike and take our Jeep all over the place. Summers are hot but we adjust by going up in altitude, 60 miles gets to the low '80s. No humidity!
I'm 25 mile outside St George in a small town. Housing is so inexpensive it's scary. 400K would buy a really nice home here. Our home would probably sell in the mid 4s right now and our taxes are $1900/yr.
