Default 225 wide on 6.5" rims, safe?

16x6.5

Would 225/50/16 be safe on these rims? For autocross and daily driven.

I'd like a bit more lateral grip. But I don't want to throw any tires. I drive in corners hard.

Thanks.

225/50-16 can be installed on any wheel from 6.0" to 7.5"

IMHO, that's just too small a width for a Vette to get the grip needed for autocross or really hard cornering. Even the base 16" wheel was 8.5" wide (Z51 znd Z52 cars got a 9.5" wide rim) and came with a 255/50 tire up through 1987.

The 88 and later C4's with 17"s had a 9.5" wide wheel with 275's until GM went back to an 8.5" wide front wheel and 245's in front and 285's in back.

You might try to sell the narrow tires and wheels to get some money for the correct sizes. Even if you go with the Kumho Supra 712 in 255/50-16, you will get very good handling response and the tires are only $92 each at the Tire Rack. Stock 16" Vette wheels can be had cheaply on the C4 Parts For Sale section or on eBay.

For best handling, you always want to go with the widest rim width you can. Even if you have to keep the same tire, it will help more than going with the narrow rim and a wider tire.
