Most auto parts box stores have products to brighten the letters. I have uses a product available at Pep Boys called "Tire Bleach" (I think) in a white plastic spray bottle. Works really good and costs about $6.

You're probably thinking of "Westley's Tire Bleach". Good stuff, and it's been around FOREVER!

It's readily available at most auto part stores, and big box retailers that have an auto dept.

I used to use SOS pads when I was running white letter tires. Gets em nice and white.

I've used them, too, but if the edges of the letters have the usual blunt edges, that shreds the SOS pad pretty quickly. I found that the SOS pads are better on white walls.
