'84: No start with Speedo cluster removed?

Before I dig into the wiring diagram in the service manual I thought I'd just ask a question here first. I took the Speedometer cluster out last week to get it repaired. I tried to start the car today to move it to do some engine work, but no success. Is the cluster required for the engine or ECM to do their job, or is it just coincidental that the car ran okay before I removed the cluster, and now it doesn't?

I have the cluster out of mt 86. I just started it and moved the car over so I can open the passenger door to access stuff on that side. No problem.
