OEM steering wheel deconversion?
Howdy, folks. I recently bought a C4 with an aftermarket NRG quick-release steering wheel. Naturally, these aftermarket steering wheels don't have airbags. I don't plan to take this car onto the track or anything, it's just going to be a cruising car. Frankly, I'd just feel better about driving a car with 1 airbag than 0 airbags. As such, I was thinking that I'd buy an OEM steering wheel and install that instead. I have several questions about this.
EDIT: Alright, it seems like the very prospect of trusting a >30yr old airbag is unsound. Looks like I'm sticking with the NRG quick-release. Thanks for the replies, folks!
- Has anyone here tried to do anything similar?
- Is it even really worth it?
- Would the previous owner have had to remove or otherwise render inoperable any of the wiring under the steering wheel when installing the NRG base?
- If I were to try and source an OEM steering wheel and airbag module, how could I get one that's not too expensive?
- Would an OEM airbag module still be reliable at this point, 33 years later?

Here's my opinion. I have a 1996, and the OEM Steering Wheel is THE MOST HIDEOUS wheel Chevy ever put on a car. It's ugly, bulky and there really is no good driving position. HAVING SAID THAT...Airbags were new at the time. They hadn't yet perfected them or gotten them to scrunch into a small space, so I'm sure this was probably the best Chevy could come up with at the time. I don't fault them, I just hate the wheel.
You might consider looking into an aftermarket wheel designed to accommodate the stock airbag. Something like this: https://www.realcarbontastic.com/pro...steering-wheel
Yes, I know it's costly, but it's a damn nice looking wheel that uses the stock airbag. If you want to go stock, you can pick up a used wheel in good shape on fleaBay for $100-150. I've seen pre-owned airbags for anywhere between $75 and $150, Now, aside from a big bolt in the middle, I know nothing about the electronics involved. I would think they would still be in the column (hopefully not cut out). Maybe someone can chime in.

I appreciate the suggestion, really. Given the options, it seems like the best move is just to stick with what I've got and be extra careful so that I don't need the airbag.

I wouldn't trust an OEM airbag from the 90s.
I have an NRG wheel in my 92. I just stuffed the connector inside as I recall. You could certainly swap back, but it will likely be cost prohibitive. Irbags are not cheap, and cheap airbags are not trustworthy.
