Default Help! 1964 heater core change with AC

Good evening everybody. I am pulling out what little hair I have left.

I am changing the heater core in my wife's 1964 coupe with air. I have searched the forum and probably read 90% if not all the threads on heater core changing. I have removed the two nuts on the inside of the car and the three nuts on the firewall in the engine compartment. It feels like there is one more nut somewhere. The lower part of the box moves freely but the top has something holding it.

Am I missing something?

I am trying to be patient with these 50 year old parts so I don't make an expensive mistake. The car is a November of 63 build if it makes a difference.

Thanks,

EJ

Hi,

Yes I removed the one by the gas pedal and the one all the way to the right by the kick panel.

Does anyone have a picture of the heater core box from a A/C car, The portion that faces (mounting side) the firewall?

Thanks for the pictures Jeff. What I'm trying to see is if there is a hidden bolt/nut somewhere.

I took the 3-Nuts off from the firewall on the engine side around the heater core plate, and the 2- nuts off in the interior side the one to the left and the one to the right.

Is there a hidden nut or bolt under the evaporator core case/blower motor assembly? All the pictures and diagrams I'm seeing show 5-mounting points.

Might be a bead of sealant across the top. You've removed all the nuts that I know of. Can you take a feeler gauge and use it like a thin putty knife to go around the perimeter?

Here are a couple of photos of an A/C heater case showing the firewall attachments - there are no hidden screws.

while its out it might be a good time to replace all the foam seals in the heater box for all the flaps.

Default Update!!!!!!

Update!!! The heater core assembly has been removed from the firewall. It appears that 50 year old glue is strong stuff. I had to give the box a little more persuasion than I would have like but I was able to get the job done.

Thanks to all for your input and pictures it helps when you think you've checked everything but still feel you missed something.

Now I will properly reseal the box and replace the heater core or fix the old one if it/s repairable.

Thanks again you guys are the best.

There's only ONE place to get the seal kit - Dr. Rebuild - his seals are the BEST - right size, right material.

Your correct on that JohnZ. I picked them up from the Dr. on Thursday. Lucky for me his warehouse is the next town over from me.
