Default Spring - Don't Forget to Flush Brake Fluid!

Doing a brake fluid flush on my 17k mile car but I believe the fluid to be OEM, so its 12 years old. Definitely needed to be changed...

At 12 years old, I believe you are right!

It is already too late. Not changing it regularly will corrode your calipers due to moisture build up in the fluid, and pretty soon you are looking at seized calipers, which need to be rebuilt at substantial cost.

I forgot to mention the ABS controller. After the fluid flush make sure you do 3-4 hard braking to activate and get that awful trapped fluid out of the pumps. That is even more expensive fix if it is rusted shut.

It's on my list, but I need to do the Charger and F-150 first. It's been about 5 years since I did them; used Valvoline synthetic DOT 4. They all still "look" very clean.

Buy some brake moisture strips & check the moisture level of your fluid, Amazon sells them cheap

Brake fluid is the least maintained fluid in most cars, with power steering fluid coming in at #2.

I know plenty of people/vehicles that have 50,000 or 100,000+ miles on the original brake fluid.

Where can one find the bleeder valves for the GS calipers? There is one bleeder that I want to replace with a new one.

I assume the bleeders just thread out and the new ones just thread in. Then you just have to bleed that one caliper where it was replaced. Right?

I don't think they are anything special but as always Rockauto is my first place to check. Just have to bleed that caliper.

Good PSA and use of Motiv bleeder as pressure source, but definitely don't let your fluid go that long.

And don't let the fluid get on the paint.

Sadly, RockAuto wont ship to this state. They have a lawsuit going on.

AcDelco looks decent. Some of the aftermarket bleeders supposedly leak (per reviews)

I assume the new bleeder is just installed "dry" with no type of thread sealant needed, right?

My truck hasn't had a brake fluid change in over 25 years. Calipers aren't seized. No leaks (rusted steal lines). No brake system issues at all.

Brake fluid is one of those things that goes unnoticed, but once it goes bad , that's when it really goes bad with leaking caliper piston seals, leaking lines leaking, hose fittings, diminished braking, etc.

Most people don't notice the slow and gradual brake pedal feel loss as the fluid goes bad over the years. I just changed the fluid in an older car and afterwards, it almost feels like I did a complete brake job on it. Brakes smoother, less pedal push, and no pulling to a side, just from a fluid change.

If you ever tracked a Corvette with old brake fluid, specially 20+ year old fluid, you would crash the car after the brake system failed due to brake fluid failure. Ron Fellows racing school changes the brake fluid on all the new C8s on a regular basis. Otherwise, people can crash, get injured, or killed

I apologize, sometimes I forget to indicate hyperbole.
My truck has air brakes. No fluid, no calipers.
The Corvettes are all on pretty strict maintenence schedules. The drivers based on milage, the not based on time.

Change all your fluids if you have no recent record. Best maintenance you can do!

The AC Delco bleeders are not easy to find. Tried a few online sources and they are not available.

Will keep looking...

I did this. Accidentally of course but yeah, I did it when I bought my 92 track car. Seller said brake fluid was fresh, it was not. I should have checked it.

Obviously, I didn't die. And I didn't crash. I navigated it off track and into the grass while avoiding other cars. If you can't handle an emergency situation like that, you have no business being on track, or frankly on the road.

Don't take this to mean "ignore your brake fluid and send it". I'm not saying that. I'm saying it's not as dangerous as telling your wife you'd like to bone her sister or best friend cuz she's prettier, and she put should be able to handle it as a driver (and you shouldn't do track days places that are all walled off as a novice).
