I've been a C2 owner for a hot minute, but I wanted something a little more trackable. I figured an early C4 with a mechanically questionable drivetrain would be a fun project and I wouldn't have to care about originality. In that search, I stumbled on something unexpected, pretty close to home, and at a price I wasn't horrified by. So instead of a basketcase '85 with a carb that Bubba can't figure out, I brought home a ZR-1: '91 #773 with 41k miles, two acrylic tops, a red interior, and new tires.
AC's shot but I haven't bothered messing with it yet (R12), 1-2 shift is rough at high rpm so I'm planning to flush that and probably try the reverse bleeding (DOT 4 I guess is the way to go now), and there's a little paint damage on the hood that isn't obvious until you look directly at it from within a few feet. One of the acrylic tops is cracked so that'll make for a good core, and the one that's just sun-baked can live in the bag. It's an absolute blast to drive, and I can't wait to get it to an autocross/SOLO this summer. I've already enjoyed killing some free time at work going through this section, particularly the megathread, and I've already got the factory service manuals.
It's not every day you stumble on an affordable example of a car you had on posters as a kid. Saving up for a 959 will be much more challenging.
Congrats on the Z. If the 1-2 shift still gives you problems after the hydraulic fluid exchange and gear box fluid exchange, hopefully its not a synchro issue.
The glass too has the VIN etched into the frame so you might want to keep that in mind before you let it go. Any and all questions you might have can easily be answered here. If you have a question someone will have an answer.

Yep it would be a good idea to check which top has the VIN on it--I doubt the car originally came with two acrylic to, but of course I could be wrong. If you want to sell one or just get it fixed, I suggest you contact Melrose T-Tops in Cortland IL. they usually do swaps but they might want just a frame to use. Anyway, good folks. --Bob
Very nIce find for sure, doesn’t sound as tho you will have much difficulty getting it sorted. Still pretty green myself but enjoying every minute of seat and wrench time.
The SPID label could answer many questions regarding the tops, CC3(transparent only), 24S(blue) or 64S(bronze) C2L two tops and would still display whichever transparent was included. If SPID displays CF7 then it was a solid color top only production car. The VIN derivative is on the left rail forward edge of transparent tops if OE/GM.
This post has snapshot of VIN derivative and also an explanation of the derivative.
Yeah I didn't think both tops were original, but I did not know the VIN would be etched in. I'll check that out, and hopefully it's on the one that's still useable. I'm guessing the original is the cracked one, and the other was purchased later.
Thanks for the shop recommendation. I see some of the vendors like Zip outsource it, but of course they don't tell you who they work with.
I saw in the other thread where the VIN is stamped into the frame, but is it also somewhere on the acrylic itself? As expected, the cracked top is the original, the crazed top is from another car.
