Street takeovers have always been a thing. They just used to be called street races and now with social media, they have proof that something has been done vs. showing up afterwards when people are scattering.
Can't say I agree with this. I grew up racing in NJ, if you wanted to race you knew where to meet up. People would hang out, not bang their **** off the rev limiter, find a race or two and head out and handle business and come back. If ricers showed up there was usually a backup plan. I never even heard of a street takeover until a few years ago. Sure groups of cars may have head out in packs, but the point was to do it where there wasn't traffic and not to draw any traffic. The only time we impeded traffic would be if we stopped to do digs on roads back in the sticks with nobody on them.
I understand the humor, but sadly any keyless start, RWD and powerful car is a target. C6, C7, lots of BMW and MB cars, Infiniti, Camaros, Mustangs.....
If it's got a fob that can be cloned, it's a target. And the cars get obliterated as a result
This!
CoPart is filled with these street takeover cars that have been left for dead. C6's are popular to steal and use them in these events.

Likewise. Car guys would gather at car meets or parking lots, setup a race, then go to some remote spot like the corn fields or rural area with no traffic around. Do the race there and then come back to the car meet. Races were done in a way to gather the least amount of attention in areas that were uninhabited by people or traffic. It was UNHEARD of taking over a city street intersection and doing donuts for 10 minutes. This is a new phenomena and as mentioned, is mainly done by criminals who stole the cars. Bouncing off the rev-limiter for 10-15 minutes, while doing donuts, will most assuredly destroy the engine, the trans, the differential, the tires, as the abuse is off the charts. Real car guys would never do that to their vehicles.
