Low mile ZR1 original injectors.
Considering a low mile (12k) ZR1. I believe it has original injectors. Should I assume injectors will fail shortly? What should I budget for replacement cost. Looks liked they pressure washed engine so plenum and cam covers are stained. Does any know current cost to have them powder coated?
Thanks
Thanks

What year Z? 90-92 injectors are the issue. If not bad now they will the more u use the car with today’s ethanol infused fuel. Replacement cost depends greatly on if you do it yourself or have a shop do it. DIY is about ~$500 - $700 depending on brand. Accel is most popular. Can’t speak to what a shop would charge. My guess would be ~$800 - $1000 parts and labor.
Top end refinishing is the same situation. DIY is simply the cost of powder coating or paint and gaskets. No more than ~$400. Haibeck charges $1750 to do the parts only and $2500 installed.

If your doing one it might be best to do both due to overlapping labor. Then there’s the “while your in there “ stuff like hoses and reconditioning of the starter solenoid.
Given the mileage of the car in question that should be about it.
Best of luck

Thanks H. It's a 90 from a Chev dealers collection. It is 23,995.00, but I am assuming injector replacement needs to be figured in the mix. Refinishing top parts is a must for .I love the look of the LT5 with original silver finish.
If the injectors are still working well, would an additive designed to fend off ethanol damage, like Performance Stabil help them to survive?

Stabilizers will not help you.
If you put today's gasoline in that car the injectors will fail.
Not IF.
WHEN.
Negotiate with the dealer, it's a known issue.

The Accel #150821 injectors from Summit Racing (today) will run just under $634 for 16, plus tax n shipping.
Not entirely "plug n play". IIRC it was the secondary injectors which requires a little plastic indexing nub to be ground off before the connector will go on. (No biggie. Takes a few seconds each with a Dremel to grind it off.) I've had mine installed now for 7 years with NO PROBLEMS.
In addition, I'd recommend new O-rings for the injector housing. The primary injectors are sealed at the top of the injector body, instead of at the tip. So, you'll want to goto Jerry's Gaskets and order the Vinton O-rings for the 90 ZR-1. Jerry will know exactly what you need. (And, you may need a new plenum gasket as well as new O-rings for the fuel rails...while you're "in there".)

Based on the fact that you will need to refinish the PC parts that would be a deal breaker for me. Price of almost $24,000 with get you a pristine Z with those miles. It’s too much of a gamble to ship the cam covers out for refinishing, the cam covers and heads are a matched set, lose the cam covers and the heads are useless now if you can have it done locally that’s something to take into account. As far as injectors,as stated they will need to be replaced. If you were to buy the car at $24,000 then ship it to Marc H for the refinishing and injectors you might have at least $28,000 in the car when it’s right.

I bought used Bosch injectors from FIC, new jerry gaskets & O-rings and it was $450. New injectors, gaskets, etc will run you more than double plus labor. I did mine myself, took 4 hours. If I did it again I could do it in an hour & a half probably. I also did new fuel pumps & filters. I now run ethanol free 90 octane in it.

Just for a point of reference. I pulled a set of original injectors out of a 35k mile 91 engine a few days ago. 3 were bad, 5 were marginal and 8 were good. Mileage really means little in this case. Age, in my case 27 years, with ethanol in the gas is everything.

Thanks guys....lots of options out there. This one just happens to be within driving distance, without plane tickets and shipping required. I'll look at it with the expense of injectors and refinish of top engine components considered. Dealer confirmed there has been no injector replacement preformed.

That was my thinking. My previous ZR1 with 13k miles was near mint. This one has stained top components, aftermarket radio (single DIN), and scratched consolre.

I’d go to a $20k offer. Worst they can do is say no. Given the condition issues you posted you will have some work to do. If you get it for $22 or better you’ve done well in my opinion.
By the way are those original tires? From what little I can see they look old. Anything over 6 years old will need to be replaced.
Good luck,
H

I’d go no more than $20,000 out the door based on what work it needs,I paid $125 just for an NOS ashtray door.

You'll next want to join the ZR-1 NetRegistry. Lots of activities and gatherings forming up for this 2018 season, including a local ZR-1 BBQ there in Tx the 4th of April and the 6th annual Mountain Run that begins on Saturday before Mother's Day and ends up at the C4 gathering in Bowling Green. (see the ZR-1 page on this FORUM & on the Registry site page as well.)
