C6 Corvette: How to Fix Unresponsive Door Handles

The C6 used a slick looking door opening mechanism in lieu of a traditional handle, but sometimes it doesn't work as slickly as it looks. Learn how to fix the issue here.

This article applies to the C6 Corvette (2005-2013).

Instead of door handles, the C6 Corvette utilizes a button-actuated electric door opening mechanism on the inside edge of the door. This mechanism gives the door a sleek, low-profile look, but it does come with a drawback versus a handle, as the electrics can become unresponsive with time. Fortunately, this is an easy fix with minimal cost involved.

Materials Needed

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Sandpaper or wire wheel
  • Degreaser or dielectric grease (optional)

Step 1 – Remove the door handle

The door handle is attached to the door by two screws on the back side of the door; remove them and wiggle the handle out of the door.

Step 2 – Remove the backing plate of the door handle

The handle assembly is comprised of two plastic pieces, and the back casing is what needs to be removed. This casing is secured with a handful of small Phillips-head screws.

Step 3 – Clean the metal contacts inside

There are two metal contacts inside the door opener; carefully clean these with either sandpaper or light action with a wire wheel or wire brush. The goal here is to effectively clean and polish these connections, not to grind material off.

Step 4 – Re-assemble and re-install the handle

Re-assemble the handle, which should snap into place, and then re-fit the handle onto the door.
