A love that lasted

Michael Sabo is a sensible man. He is also a Corvette man. When he was a young man he had a 1963 roadster that he drove to and from high school. After college, the time came to start a family and the '63 had to be sold off. Then later in life, when all the kids were grown and done with college, he bought a 1967 'Vette. But then some essential home repairs were needed and again Michael had to sell his car.

That's a lofty goal

After a bit, the stars aligned and Michael wanted to try his luck with another Corvette. However this time he wanted his dream car: a C2 Grand Sport. Yup, the model that GM only made five examples of. That car. As Michael put it, “I was very confident I couldn’t afford a five- to seven-million-dollar car.”

It's classified as a continuation

So with a budget in mind that didn't include the ridiculous, Michael began exploring the world of replicas. Cheap knock-offs with second rate materials would not do. However, replicas did offer something that one of the original five never could: modern tech. Enter Duntov Motor Company from Dallas, Texas.

Follow the script

What sets Duntov apart from other kit manufacturers is that they acquired GM's actual blueprints and molds from the #002 Grand Sport. DMC made sure that their Grand Sport is a faithful recreation right down to the nuts and bolts. If the blueprint says to use an OEM Corvette part, DMC does. If the plans say a custom part is needed, DMC will procure it. It's really as simple as that.

Best of both worlds

Michael was going to have his dream car but it would be customized to his taste. McCabe Motor Sports in Falcon, Colorado built a naturally aspirated 427 from a small-block. The engine has a scat crank, Callies connecting rods, and Mahle pistons. It runs a dry-pump oiling system with a Peterson pump. The unit makes 586 lb-ft of torque at 5,400 rpm and 700 horsepower at 7,000 rpm.

Brown on Brick

The Grand Sport wears an Audi paint color of Ipanema Brown Metallic that was applied by Robert Ediger at Robert's Autobody in Colorado Springs. The interior of the car has about half a yard more material in it than a real Grand Sport does. The cabin of the car was done in Brick Nissan/Infiniti leather and was done by Knowles Trim Shop in Colorado Springs. The seats have a set of G-Force five-point harnesses and the steering wheel is a Grant 14-inch Classic Vette design mounted to an ididit steering column.

Finally in his garage

This Grand Sport that belongs to Michael isn't an original. However, to us, it seems just as good and is markedly improved over what the original had to offer.
