Dormant Dreams

In the suburb of Macedon, New York, garages in all states of organization harbor mysteries of the past —old photo albums, antiquated exercise equipment, maybe even grandpa’s old baseball card collection. Among the most recently revealed of those secrets is this blue and while Rare 1968 Motion Phase III GT Corvette —found in the middle of customization that halted somewhere around 1987.

Get Out of My Dreams

’68 edition Corvettes weren’t then, nor are they considered now, to be monsters of the race track. It appears the original owner of this blue and white beauty sought to give the vehicle a meaner look for prowling the mean Macedon Streets of 1987 —or to perhaps to impress a romantic interest.

Friend of the Devil

The failed customization project appears to have relied on the long-defunct firm known as Baldwin Motion. What’s known about the former auto shop/brand is limited at best. What is known is that while Baldwin produced cars that were sold with factory window stickers at Baldwin Chevrolet, this ’68 Corvette isn’t one of those original Baldwin builds.

Baldwin Chevy or Baldwin Modification?

During its hay day, Baldwin Chevrolet also customized cars that were brought in for some toughening up by clients nationwide. The genuine Baldwin Chevrolet mods and customs are still the envy of collectors and automobile aficionados across the United States.

A Dream Deferred

It seems this ’86 Motion Phase III GT from Macedon was converted to a Stage III using Baldwin Parts —but that the modifications never made it to the finish line. However, documents revealing that the Corvette was originally purchased from a Chevy dealership just ten minutes from the Baldwin Motion headquarters means we might never know the true origin.

Rocket from the Crypt

While it's sat dormant without an engine or transmission, modified parts include different back glass, a special LeMans gas cap, fender flares, and Motion III headlights. The interior is plush with a rather run-down blue carpet that needs to be replaced — as well as a steering wheel that does not match the model year. That said, there’s plenty of room for this dream to continue now that it’s been reawakened.

Once More With Feeling

According to the vehicle’s second owner —the vehicle was last run at a drag race. And while it’s impossible to know if it was a true 11-second quarter mile car with no powertrain to verify, there’s little doubt this Macedon mystery will excite restorers and collectors a lot more than an old rowing machine.
