Think you know the Corvette Wave?

It is proper Corvette etiquette to wave at the Corvette owner that passes you on the road. Fellow drivers salute each other as a sign of recognition. This, in turn, shows that you are part of the Corvette club. It also shows that you aren't a douche. Wave or don't wave, but know that it is part of owning a Corvette.

The Corvette wave has been done since No. 00001 passed No. 00002 on the road and they saluted each other. That is really the history of it. Look it up if you don't believe me. If you are a new Corvette driver or part of the younger generation of Corvette drivers, then you should know what to expect when crossing paths with another Corvette owner.

1. Did That Corvette Driver Just Flick You Off?

Maybe he/she did. I don't know. After coming to the realization that you didn't do anything to provoke it, you might want to consider that it was a friendly Corvette Wave. You can do one of two things here: return the wave or don't. Just know that you won't be mistaking that one finger in the air a second time.

2. Do You Understand the Rules?

There really isn't a proper way to execute a wave. Some lift two fingers to make a "V" and others lift a whole hand, but you should understand the rules:

  1. The first person to see the Corvette initiates the wave. Use your amazing hawk eyes to spot the Corvette, calculate the distance in order to time it so that the other driver has a clear view of you, then lift your hand and wave. Folks, don't over think it! Once you see it, raise your hand and wave. It's as simple as that. We do it all the time to say "Hi." If you do wish to perform it with precision, check out How to Properly Execute a "Corvette Wave" 101
  2. It is customary to wave back. Not waving is a big no-no and just know that person is going to be judging you all the way home. It is a simple wave back; Don't give that Corvette owner a bad impression.
  3. Don't forget to wave. It will be forgiven if you wave late, but not so much if you don't. There is probably no doubt that person is starring at you from their rear view mirror, so a late wave is still goo enough.

3. Did You Know What the Corvette Wave Was Before This?

Many still don't know that the Corvette Wave even exists. A quick search will repeatedly tell you that it is a dying custom. You might even come across sites dedicated to keeping the Wave alive. If you own a Corvette, then you are part of the club. Wave to your fellow Corvette owner and hope they are familiar with the Corvette Wave.
