1 - The Year is 1990 and...

...the C4 Corvette ZR-1 roars onto the market with a double overhead camshaft (or DOHC) LT5 engine that grabs attention and gets consumers talking. It is a beaut of a car and consumers lapped up the opportunity to test its speed and handling.

2 - Safety Matters

The 1990 C4 Corvette ZR-1 DOHC underwent an interior upgrade to welcome never-before installed, new driver-side air bags. Passenger-side airbags were then introduced four years later in 1994. These new interior upgrades proved once and for all that safety matters and even high-performing sports cars can achieve high safety rankings among national safety tests.

3 - It's All in a Little Competition

The C4 Corvette ZR-1 DOHC has remained competitively priced since its initial entry into the market. However, persistent upgrades to the interior and exterior (both minor and major) of this popular sports car has meant an annual uptick in the sticker price. Low maintenance and operational costs make the C4 Corvette ZR-1 DOHC a great buy, whether new or used.

4 - Higher Horsepower

The ZR-1 reinvigorated the convertible by bringing up horsepower to 375 hp (the 1st-Gen C4 Corvette was hampered by 205 hp). The 1990 ZR-1 also delivered a world-record on speed, achieving international recognition for achieving land speeds of over 175 miles per hour.

5 - Overall

To say the C4 Corvette ZR-1 DOHC has not won a loyal consumer following (despite persistent rising costs) through the years would be wrong. The ZR-1 DOHC never became the "best-selling" sports car it was designed (and imagined) to be, but it certainly delivers on speed (as compared to sports cars of that era) and driveability. In short, the C4 Corvette ZR-1 DOHC is one sports car with its own set of merits, including solid engineering, great design, and styling, as well as cutting-edge automotive innovation.
