1. Diagnostic Test

There have been a number of GM vehicles, including the Chevrolet Corvette, that are affected by a software issue. The problem could occur under specific driving conditions and habits, which would force the airbag module to run a diagnostic test, which means it deactivates the airbags for the test. If an accident occurs during this time, the airbags won't activate, thus causing a serious injury or even death.

2. Seat Belt Failure

The Chevrolet Corvette features a pretensioner that allows the seat belt to retract quickly to adjust the passengers in case of an emergency, thus keeping them in the right position and farthest from danger. During the diagnostic test that occurs randomly, the seat belt pretensioner fails, which means the airbags won't deploy, and the seat belt won't adjust appropriately.

3. Checking Your Corvette

There are three ways to check if your Corvette is affected by this recall:

  1. You can check with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hot-line (1-888-327-4236) or website
  2. You can contact your dealership and provide your VIN number
  3. You can visit the GM Owner Center and input your VIN number

4. No Cost to You

If your Corvette is affected by this recall, be sure to go to your dealership immediately. Fortunately, fixing a recall is the manufacturer's responsibility, which means it is completely free of charge for you, unlike the Technical Service Bulletins you may find for your car which are just recommended procedures that the owner is responsible for.

5. The Fix

Although the problem is critical, the fix is much simpler. If your Chevrolet Corvette is affected by the airbag recall, the dealership will simply update the computer's software and reinstall it, which will quickly fix the problem, thus retaining your airbags' and seat belts' functionality.
