1. The history

The exhibit titled "American Dreaming: Corvette 7 Generations and Beyond" takes guests through the history of what could have been at Chevrolet with these designs. The majority of cars in the exhibition never made it to production but every now and then you will see something familiar on a car that did impress top brass enough to make it onto a production vehicle.

2. The secrecy

To keep rival car manufacturers from stealing design cues and see some inner workings of what is going on with a brand means destroying these designs once they are turned down. However, artists will sometimes hold onto these as they are their "babies" and want to save the work they've toiled on for so long. Many of these on display have never been seen before by the public and the artists have risked their entire careers by sneaking them out of the company.

3. From the hands of a legend

Included in the exhibit is a sketch by the legendary Harley Earl who created the notion of automotive design and championed the GM styling department from the beginnings as just the "color and trims" firm to being the global trendsetter behind countless vehicles.

4. The host

Retired GM engineer Bill Porter opened the exhibit by being the latest to sign one of the ceiling beams in the Scarab Club's second-story drawing room. The whole tradition began back in 1928 when the Club re-opened its doors at its current location on Farnsworth St. Porter led the design teams on cars such as the 1968 GTO, 1970 Firebird, 1973 Trans Am, and 1995 Buick Riviera.

5. The curators

American Dreaming exhibit curators John Douglas Peters and Robert Edwards spent a whole year gathering and curating the catalog of items for the show. The exhibit is the first of its kind and celebrates not just the designers but the whole art form Detroit started. Included in the exhibit is a design competition open to transportation students who can conceptualize what the new mid-engine C8 Corvette may look like.
