Slow Process

Callaway Cars has been around since 1977, and it's been producing high-performance Corvettes for decades, too. So we've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a Callaway C8, but to date, one hasn't materialized. The legendary tuner has been hard at work developing a hotter mid-engine Corvette, but it seems we won't see one until next year, according to Autoweek.

Adding On

"What we have to do from a product point of view is slotted to the product plan in the correct way," Reeves Callaway, the company's founder and owner said. "And what that means for us is, we can't compete with any model that General Motors produces, we have to be an additive to whatever model we choose."

Enhanced Product

"And whatever model makes the most sense, though we don’t want to be in a position where people have to choose between a Callaway and a General Motors standard product, we want them to always think of the standard product as enhanced by Callaway's approach," Callaway added. "So generally, we choose the top-performing model and do something to it."

Boost?

As most are already aware, tuners are having a hard time cracking the C8's ECU. Callaway told Autoweek that his company is working on generating more power in a number of ways, including by adding "some form of positive manifold pressure," though he wouldn't clarify if this meant adding a supercharger or turbo.

Highest Performer

Callaway knows that he has to at least design a product that has more power than the forthcoming C8 Z06, which is rumored to make over 600 horsepower from its 5.5-liter flat-plane crank V8. But generating at least 100 more horsepower from the Stingray's 6.2-liter LT2 V8 won't be terribly difficult. "It will always be the most performance that you can get in a GM platform vehicle, whether it’s a truck, or a Corvette, Suburban, or Tahoe," Callaway said. "It always has to be the highest performing of any of those."

Waiting Game

Thus, we continue to wait for the inevitable Callaway C8, which will very likely be worth it. For now, those looking to add some Callaway touches to their shiny new ride can do so by purchasing a set of the company's wheels, and it also has an aero package in the works to boot.
