I'm Different

Logic would generally dictate that if you were in possession of a 1-of-66 Corvette, you might restore it back to stock and keep it stashed away in some private collection. But even though this particular '66 N03 Corvette we found at Mecum Auctions has indeed received a body-off restoration, it clearly wasn't your typical, obsessed with originality kind of job.

Exported Racer

This particular car was originally purchased by a German chap named Toly Arutunoff from Capital Chevrolet in Nashville, Tennessee. He promptly had it exported to his country and immediately put it into service as a race car.

No Clapped Out Racer

Just one of 66 big tank Corvettes produced in 1966, this former racer has obviously survived the test of time in spite of the odds. Many old racers wound up clapped out, but this one looks no worse for wear today.

Rare Parts

Credit an extensive body-off restoration for that, a job that involved sourcing a bunch of hard-to-find parts including door panels, seats, headrests, and seat belts.

Even Rarer

Pop the hood, and you'll find a nicely refinished L72 427/425 hp engine backed up by a Muncie 4-speed transmission, making this big tank car one of just 15 produced with that drivetrain combination.

Tasty Options

From there, things just keep getting rarer. This car is also equipped with J56 brakes (one of 356) and J50 power brakes options, along with the F41 heavy-duty suspension.

Correct Choices

A G81 Positraction rear end sorts out this awesome package. And on the inside, you'll find some additional goodies including A82 head rest seats, an A02 tinted windshield, and C48 heater delete.

Proper Documentation

All of this is backed up quite nicely with copies of the Corvette's NCRS Certificate, the original bill of sale, the statement of origin, and a Homologation Recognition Form.

Keep the Character

On the outside, however, this incredibly cool 'Vette retains much of the character it carried through its life in motorsports. That includes a set of timeless American Racing Torq Thrust wheels and a black hood with room for a racing number.

One of a Kind

While many might want to see this Corvette restored to completely original condition, we're digging the fact that the previous owner resisted that urge. After all, there are plenty of completely original old Corvettes out there. This one, on the other hand, is one of a kind!
