Engine Work

Base Vettes are down on power compared to the all-star brother that is the Z06, but that doesn’t mean they’re slow. Simple upgrades like exhaust systems that allow a car to breathe better car go a long way in freeing up power. When these parts are combined with the correct camshaft and tune, a base model can unlock seriously respectable numbers.

Coilovers

Going fast isn’t all about straight line speed. Many people enjoy B-roads on the weekend with periodic track time in between. Upgrading to a good set of coilovers with moderate spring rates will improve your overall driving experience while making this car more fun in the corners than a Z.

Lighten Everything

Reducing unsprung weight will have a notable effect on day to day performance that you will also notice at the track. Lightening up your wheels and tires can really liven up a chassis on your favorite stretch of tarmac. You will also gain braking and acceleration by reducing unsprung mass which is handy as this mod is a common one. For more information see my wheels buyer guide.

R-Compound Tires

If destroying Z06s, M3s and EVOs at your next track day sounds like a good time then this is your mod. R-compound tires will transform a base car into a corner-carving killer that shames high-performance models left and right. Nothing makes a car go quicker than this one. It’s the most important on the list.

Brake Pads and Lines

Upgrading pads and lines is the cheapest thing you can do that will make the most difference. When you pair this with everything else on the list, a base car transforms into an incredibly capable machine. Braking feel improves driver confidence while simultaneously allowing the car to go deeper into the corners. Adding a proportioning valve can fine-tune stability which allows more advanced drivers to adjust the car’s attitude into the braking zone.

Base Car Race Car

Driven on the limit very few cars will keep up with a lightly prepared base model Corvette. When all of these parts are set up correctly with proper ride height and alignment the C5 to C7 base cars are deceptively fast. Remember: setting up the car is just as important as buying quality parts so don’t skip out on things like cornering weighting or adjusting ride heights. With patience, you will have a monster that is just as fun as a Z06 and maybe even faster!
