Change of Heart?

Among the many colors of the proverbial rainbow, few are as polarizing or controversial in the automotive world than yellow. Well, except for pink, of course. It takes a special kind of person to drive something draped in this incredibly bright color, that's for sure.

And it's sure to capture the attention of everyone who sees it, law enforcement included. But seeing this Velocity Yellow C1 Corvette over at Super Chevy might just be enough to change our minds on the color. Maybe.

Dream Come True

The owner of this super-clean Corvette, Darren Heavner, isn't one for subtlety. And he isn't afraid to admit it. Or drive it, more specifically. And ever since he rode around in his dad's friend's '59 back in the day, he's always wanted a Corvette of his own.

Post Haste

Like most, it took many years for that dream to become a reality. Which is when Heavner came across a one-owner 'Vette that had been sitting in storage for 15 years. He promptly purchased the car, had it shipped to Texas, and started wrenching on it.

Hybrid Restoration

Heavner got his new ride running and driving, but he wanted to take the car to a level he wasn't personally capable of getting it too. Thus, he sought help from Triple F Automotive with an eye toward giving the old 'Vette a "hybrid" restoration.

Meaning of Hybrid

What the heck is a hybrid restoration, you ask? According to the car's owner, it means “modern steering, suspension, and brakes along with a new drivetrain while completely maintaining the 1960 body lines and interior design.” Kinda like a restomod, really.

Interesting Choice

The 'Vette did require a complete frame-off restoration to make this happen, however. And that's when Heavner landed on painting the car in a unique hue, one that was a factory option on 2014/2015 Corvettes.

Small Upgrades

The frame was simply refurbished and repaired to factory condition. All of the stock chrome was re-chromed, and the body and frame were soon back together. The interior received a full restitch, remaining mostly stock save for a Tremec shifter and Dakota Digital gauges.

Dressed Up

The theme continued in terms of drivetrain selection, where the crew opted to go with a brand new 350 crate motor. They worked to keep the small block looking somewhat original, except a few dress-up items were added. Including painted Billet Specialties valve covers and a stock-style air cleaner to cover the EFI setup.

Extra Gear

Instead of going with an old school 4-speed manual, Heavner chose to go with a more modern TREMEC TKO 600 5-speed. Mostly because that extra gear makes this old Corvette much nicer to drive on the highway.

Head Turner

It took 20 months in total, but Heavner's dream Corvette was finally finished. And so far, it sounds like he doesn't regret any of his decisions. Including that polarizing paint choice! “The car is a pleasure to drive,” he said, “and turns heads wherever I go—due in no small part to the color.”
