OEM Wheels for wheel to wheel racing
Hello All,
How strong are the oem Vette wheels? Either the wagon wheels or other oem wheels. Can they stand up to regular track racing? Are there any models I need to stay away from?
I'm sorry for knowing so little, but could you please indicate some basic sizes of them? I am especially interested in the rears, as they will be going on a project car that's running the C5 entire drivetrain and C5 rear suspension.

Thanks for the leads, though I'm still looking for info from people who have actually run the stock wheels at the track for many hours. It's very easy to say theory on the web, but another thing completely to say experience. :-)
Certainly CCW's are great, and I've got a set in my truck, but may need something in the meantime due to lack of time to make the body modifications for fitment. I don't want to spend the money for custom wheels twice, so would love to know if people have any real issues with the wheels failing or bending crazy easily for track use.

It's hard to say with any certainty. One thing is for sure; don't have them powdercoated. All of the OE wheels that I've seen that have failed at the track were powdercoated.
The strongest OE wheels would probably have to be the '01 Z06 wheels because they are forged aluminum (made by Alcoa). As far as the others, I have no idea unfortunately.

A guy in our club runs OEM wheels for W2W. I think this is his second season. They are reasonably light and strong. This is my 7th or 8th season of DE events on a set of GS wheels that I bought new from GM.
Most broken wheels I have seen on the internet are of questionable heritage. I would be careful of used wheels if you don't know the original owner and their history.
Any wheel should be washed frequently and checked for damage or cracks.
