Default Too much straight pipe for C5 race setup.

I have a 98 C5 that I use for only track day use. The other day I installed a new exhaust stystem. No cats, X pipe, straight pipes over the axle, with four stainless steel tips. Sounded like a good idea, NOT! They are loud, and flow great (I imagine), but they backfire and and flames come out of the rear on down shifts others racers say. Any suggestions? I'm thinking some glass packs. Help.

Don't get me wrong, I like loud, backfire and flames from the rear, that can't be too good.

I have to Supertrapp mufflers no disc unless noise restrictions at track. Sound great as everyone said at the track. http://racerpartswholesale.com/supertrp.htm

just means your tune is a little rich off-throttle. its not a big problem. just fuel + hot exhaust = fire.

Don't worry too much about the backfire/flames. Most GT-1 cars do that on downshifts and they probably have more compression/hp than you do. Your just going off throtle rich. Shouldn't melt any bodywork, might soot it up though. If you use radios, consider Nitro radios. They put a headset in the helmet that you can hold a conversation in a Top Fueler or Funny car ($300 plus mic and your helmet). Are your pipes louder than that?

Not that loud! Just the backfire is a bother compared to before. Thanks for the info.

Glass packs with louvers hurt the flow too much. Use something like a supertrapp, or walker dynomax bullet mufflers - they are compact and take the edge off the sound nicely. Two 4" round ones will fit in the tunnel nicely.

Your tune is probably a bit off now too with the reduced back pressure.

John, just wait until you hear the C6Z with straight 3" pipes (with stock cats). It is sheer music at 7,000 RPM.
