Best Vinyl Numbers and Letters
I was wondering what everybody was using for autox and HPDE car numbers and letters. I have done the tape and white shoe polish thing and man it's UGLY! I'm looking for something re-usable and will stand up to HPDE speeds

Static doesn't work.
Get a roll of Contact paper (at Walmart or Lowes/Home Depot), print out some full-size letter in your word processor, cut them out and trace onto the back of the contact paper, and then cut again.
Takes a few minutes to make a set, but if you go with easy numbers (not too curvy, or complex), it is cheap, and they stick JUST ENOUGH to get through an event and not leave residue.

There are two sources that I have used. Solotime - they make vinyl stick on numbers that hold great. They are hard to peel off at the end of an event and save for another. Solotime cost is rather expensive also. Kar Kare makes a great line of numbers and letters for car dealers to use on windshields. They have a number of sizes and colors and are cheap - $10.00 or so for a dozen of any one letter or number. They stick great and peal off at the end of an event easily. I usually use mine for about three events before trashing them. Neither hurt the paint on the door. Google the websites of both for more info and exact pricing.

Solotime makes the best, but not the cheapest. I've used their vinyl sticky and their vinyl cling and both can work well. The cling requires some time for the water you sprayed on to evaporate...use a credit card to squeegie it out. The sticky numbers will pick up dirt over time and may end up scratching your paint, FWIW.
When using the cling numbers I started buying "reusable bumper sticker film" at Office Depot and just tracing out the numbers and letters and cutting them out, for those times when the cling wouldn't work in time, particularly for the #1 for the co-driver's number. That worked really well so I'll probably just stick with those this year.
Good luck.

Costs less than solotime. I've used the same set of of vinyl track day numbers 3 times so far and they are as good as new! Fast service too.

I find that the stitic works better if, instead of having individual digits cut, you apply digits to a large sheet of clear static material. That gives more surface area, and once the water evaporates out from under the sheet, it's pretty well stuck down.

I had a set of reuseable vinyl from them (see signature) very nice and exactly what I ordered. Unfortunately, what I ordered reminded me too much of the Dukes of Hazzard, so I only used them once.
I got another set from www.fastdecals.com. Still wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

I bought static cling sheet stock from Solotime and cut out my own numbers. The car and numbers have to be clean. I put them on the night before. I have lost numbers at speed in the rain, but it's pretty rare. The small letters are stuck on clear static cling.

Thanks for starting this post, and thanks for all of the links. I've used the painters tape method and agree it looks like crap.

in general: big enough for corner workers to see and in a contrasting color to their background (your car or a number board)...
some racing organizations require certain sizes and/or certain number boards...
i've used solotime in the past with good results but now i use a local (to me) sign/graphics shop...
