Default NASCAR COT Aero Press Conference

I don't usually car about NASCAR, but I'm interested in the AERO stuff on the new car. Watching the DTM race from Jan 22 on my TIVO, and 3/4 of it was pre-empted by a NASCAR press conference.

Part of it was actually good, explaining the safety and performance changes to the COT. If anybody is interested, I'll try and upload it.

Let me know

I spoke to Gary Nelson about this at PRI. I think most of the changes are safety and competition related. Tony Stewart publically bad mouthed the COT at PRI. He said that it looks like they stole it from a SCCA race and that they should give it back.

One interesting thing about COT: during January testing they ran a COT at Daytona at basically the same time as the current cars. The COT was about 8 mph faster than the current cars, without running a restrictor plate. I haven't heard how the COT cars will run in a pack, but if they could run Daytona and Talledega without plates that would be a great step forward.

Also going to be interesting how much the COT is going to change between this year and next.

Have a good one,
Mike

In a pack they are supposed to be more stable and not susceptible to drafting loosening the car up. This they say should make for more passing and a safer cars. Now when the hit the wings will be flying off and hopefully not into the crowds. Dave upload it please I like to follow the aero stuff. Thanks!

I'll try and get it up by tonight. They stressed the TUNABILITY of the splitter (4-6" variable length) and the wing (didn't give range of allowed angles), hoping that it will make a single car design work at both short tracks and super speedways.

While I could care less about the racing, I find the technology very interesting.

They also talk about the Dow energy absorbing material...I wonder if it will be commercially available to other racers???

Pardon my ignorance, but what is it that P&M use in the drivers door area of their chassis?

I don't know what GM uses, although it serves the same purpose. I think they use a honeycomb kevlar panel that they make in-house.

The NASCAR product IS available, $700 per door cut for the COT.

It is a kevlar/ carbon scatter shield over the drivers door bars of the roll cage.

In case something breaks loose and becomes a projectile, it will not spear or become a bullet into the driver.

This may sound un believable, but one of our fellow CF members did have a something come though his car behind the drivers door and hit is upper back in a racing accident.

I think it is fugly. It is moving even further away from even semi looking like a street car. Wings showed up and T/A died. Then again, Camrys are available with phony wings. At PRI, there was a #24 version and it had a Liebeck airfoil shape with the end plates airfoil shape as well. Gary Nelson was standing there so I asked him what was up with that and he said the end plates were up to the teams.

I think it is kind of amusing that aerodynamics in sports came in the late 50's and 60s. NASCAR is just NOW discovering aerodynamic aids, 40 some years latter.

Just close up the underside of the car and use an extractor hood might get more aero help then what they are attempting to do.
