I had good success with a HotLap in the past. Lots of folks seem to like the new Ultra-Lap.

I'm leaning towards a DL1 eventually, though... GPS track maps, data acquisition and lap timing... $1000 vs $250, though.

I have Traqmate, best bang for buck that I know of. But if you just want lap times, AMB should do, I have that too, for NASA. But for great data (and new updates every few months) Traqmate is awesome, I think it will be able to do everything the big units can do within 2 years (the ones that cost 3k etc). The updates are awesome.

I used an Ultra-lap but kept leaving the transmitter behind at the track. Picked up a PerformanceBox (GPS data acquisition) for $500 and I'm very glad I made the jump, much more useful than just a lap timer and even I would have a hard time losing it.

How do you mount it? I really don't trust windshield suction cups all that much. It looks like you get lap times, segment times, and Gs?

As for the AMB suggestion-- that only works if you run with a group that pays the track to turn on the timing loop, no?

Yes, you need a transponder on the car plus the track's scoring loop activated.

Another beacon style lap timer is AIM. IIRC AIM is compatible with an Ultralap beacon. Hotlap and Ultralap are not compatible

I use an Intercomp in car timer. It receives a beacon signal. It's seems to be compatible with about all other beacon makes. I never put out my beacon, I use everyone elses.

Who sells Intercomp timers? I heard some good things about Ultralap timers today at the track....and some not so good things about Hotlap timers...

The Intercomp also allows you to download your times into your computer.

You can put it on the windshield or tuck it away somewhere else and run an external antenna (about $25 shipped off ebay). No need to level it as it does all its math from GPS.

AMB. But only if whoever is timing the event uploads the lap data to the websites.

Hotlap timers get alot of bad press, but I've used one for about 3 years and have had good results. I've run a couple of events using a Hotlap AND a transponder for comparison, and found the Hotlap pretty accurate compared to the transponder. Occasionally you'll get a bad, or no, lap reading, but overall I have no complaints.

If I were buying a timer today, I would probably by an Ultralap as it has newer technology
